The Jeep Renegade is starting to become a more popular option. The spunky Jeeps are popping up more and more all over town. But is investing in a Jeep Renegade a smart decision? Will they provide enough value to be worth it?
How many miles will a Jeep Renegade last?
The Jeep Renegade is still a newer model, but it has stood the test of time. The Renegade made its debut in 2015, and the average driver accrues about 15,000 miles per year. If it can last 300,000 miles, then it can provide 20 years of service on the road.
People have been reporting that their Jeep Renegade models are doing just fine. Some drivers have reached between 80,000 to 90,000 miles, while others have made it over 150,000 miles. An average Renegade is expected to last between 100,000 to 150,000 miles. But they can make it 200,000 miles with regular care.
There have been some reports of electrical issues or the need to replace an air conditioning vent from time to time. However, the Jeep Renegade seems to be free of major mechanical problems for the most part. I did replace the ignition coil in the third cylinder of my Renegade, but it was surprisingly easy to do from home.
How reliable is the Jeep Renegade?
According to J.D.Power, the 2022 Jeep Renegade has an average reliability rating. It earned a reliability score of 80 out of 100. Anything between 70 and 80 is average, while scores between 81 and 90 are above-average. It’s only one point away from getting into the higher bracket.
The Renegade falls short compared to other SUVs, and it’s due for an upgrade. It’s had the same score for the past few years, indicating that it hasn’t gotten any better or worse. Plus, it has been pretty much the same since 2015.
But the 2016 model has a score of 2.0 out of five, so if you’re looking for a used Renegade, stick to more recent model years. The Renegade has had the same engine since then, but it did get a few tech upgrades to consider.
What are the biggest Jeep Renegade problems?
We switched gears and went over to Car Complaints to see what type of trouble Jeep Renegade owners have reported. It looks like the Renegade has been improving with time. The 2015 model has the most problems reported, with 320 complaints, while the 2018 Renegade only has 32 complaints.
The biggest problem with the 2015 Renegade includes electrical issues. Owners would find that their Renegade would have a completely dead battery after only owning their SUV for a few weeks.
Also, sometimes the Renegades wouldn’t start at random times during the day. But the reports are all about brand-new Jeeps, so this issue may have been solved with later models.
The second-largest issue involves transmission problems. One driver reported that their transmission doesn’t shift properly at random times. It seems to hesitate between gears. The transmission also seems to randomly surge or shift very hard out of reverse.
But the 2018 Renegade only has two reports of transmission problems, and both include hard shifting. Also, there are fewer reports of engine trouble. They involve excessive oil consumption or loss of acceleration instead of the failure to start or a dead battery.
There are no problems reported about the 2020 or 2019 Jeep Renegade yet. It looks like these are pretty reliable SUVs. However, avoid the 2015 model. Generally, vehicles from the first model year can experience problems that are corrected in later variants.
