The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is an attractive new truck being added to the Ram lineup. The High Fuel Efficiency (HFE) Crew Cab 4X2 diesel starts at $41,935. The Ram 1500 Ecodiesel gets 260 hp from the 3.0L diesel V6 engine.

CNET reviewed the 2020 EcoDiesel and gave the truck a 9.1 overall. The company also provided the truck a 9.5 in performance. The 3.0L EcoDiesel is a $4,995 upgrade over the 5.7L Hemi V8 that usually comes with the truck. The diesel upgrade offers this truck better fuel economy and towing.

“You’ll notice some audible diesel clatter under hard acceleration, or when initially pulling away from a stoplight. But overall, this engine is free of the noise, vibration, and harshness characteristics a lot of people associate with diesel powertrains.”

The 1500 EcoDiesel has an EPA-estimated 22 miles per gallon in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Ram says the EcoDiesel V6 is a “remarkably quiet, incredibly capable and efficient workhorse.” The 2021 EcoDiesel has 12,560 pounds of towing capacity and 480 lb-ft of torque. Overall, the new EcoDiesel engine seems worth it for the price.

Kelley Blue Book said, “Ram’s new diesel engine is more powerful, more capable, and offers a better value. You can’t ask for much more than that.” It works out in your favor for the price of the EcoDiesel compared to the other offered engines.

Is the Ram EcoDiesel worth it?

In theory, diesel engines last longer than similar gas-powered counterparts. Should anything go wrong, the Ram brand offers a three-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. While the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is powerful, it might not be the most powerful truck on the market. But that’s not a bad thing. The diesel engine is rugged and gets pretty good fuel economy for such a large vehicle.

If you can keep up with your required maintenance and other things like fluids, suspension, and general upkeep, your 1500 EcoDiesel should last a long time. Some owners report that this number is between 200,000 and 300,000 miles.

Additionally, you can build the truck to your specifications. Ram has many options and trims that work with the EcoDiesel engine. The eight-speed automatic TorqueFlite transmission jams through gears as anticipated. It can tow, is quiet inside, and looks pretty mean on the road.

What are some comparable diesel trucks?

The Ram website lists similar trucks in towing capacity and fuel economy but does not beat the 2021 1500 EcoDiesel. For example, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD has a 6.6L Duramax diesel V8. It gets 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. The price starts at $48,585 but gets more expensive as you go.

The 2021 Silverado gets 33 miles per gallon on the highway with a 3.0L Duramax diesel. The Silverado is technically a heavy-duty truck, so we don’t get fuel economy statistics. But the Silverado can tow up to 18,500 pounds for the 2500HD and 20,000 pounds for the 3500HD.

Ford’s F-150 is one of the more popular trucks available. The Ford F-150 3.0L Power Stroke diesel is just behind that with 29 miles per gallon. The diesel V6 option is only available on the XL trims and up. It also costs about $5,000 extra. But don’t worry, it’ll tow 12,100 pounds with the max trailer tow package, so it can also tow houses or horses.
