There’s really no denying that the Toyota 4Runner is an iconic SUV in its segment. It’s highly capable and boasts a ton of off-road prowess, offers up a generous amount of cargo space for all your goods, and can tow a pretty impressive amount. But as great as the Toyota 4Runner may be, how many miles can you actually expect one to last?    

The Toyota 4Runner is the longest-lasting midsize SUV

Not too long ago, iSeeCars set out to determine what the longest-lasting cars are. To do so, it analyzed more than 15.8 million cars, all of which were sold in 2019. iSeeCars then took that data and used it to figure out which models included in the study boasted the highest percentage of cars that were able to reach 200,000 miles. 

Fortunately for the Toyota 4Runner, it fared pretty well in iSeeCars’ study. Unfortunately, it didn’t land the top spot on the list, as that honor went to the Toyota Land Cruiser.

But, 3.9% of 4Runner models will make it to 200,000 miles. Based on this study, that makes the 4Runner the longest-lasting midsize SUV that’s currently on the market.

A Toyota 4Runner just might last you 300,000 miles

And if a Toyota 4Runner with 200,000 miles on its odometer isn’t all that impressive to you? Then you’ve got some pretty high standards. But in this case? That’s actually okay. Because, as it turns out, the 4Runner is made to last for more than 200,000 miles.

In fact, approximately 0.2% of 4Runner models will last for more than 300,000 miles. That might not seem like a lot; however, it is much better than most other cars.

How to make sure your 4Runner lasts for a long time

But don’t expect to buy a Toyota 4Runner and have it last without putting some elbow grease into its overall longevity. While a good percentage of 4Runners will surpass 200,000 miles, odds are those vehicles were pretty well taken care of.

So, how can you ensure that your 4Runner is one of the lucky ones? Maintenance. Really, if you want to see that 200,000-mile mark on your 4Runner’s odometer, you need to maintain it. 

So if you want your 4Runner to last for 200,000 miles or more…don’t forget to schedule that oil change.

Toyota models are known for their longevity

The 4Runner wasn’t the only Toyota model to show up in iSeeCars’ study. In fact, Toyota pretty much dominated iSeeCars’ list. While the Toyota Land Cruiser was recognized as the longest-lasting full-size SUV, the Toyota Tundra was tapped as the longest-lasting full-size truck.

The Toyota Avalon, Prius, and the Highlander Hybrid were also ranked pretty well in the study. So, if you want a vehicle that can last a pretty long time, you can do a lot worse than a Toyota.
