The Toyota Tundra has long been a favorite among pickup shoppers, and for good reasons too. The Toyota Tundra is known for being reliable, is able to tow a pretty hefty amount, and can be had pretty much any way that you want it. Is the Toyota Tundra the most reliable truck?

If it’s a reliable truck that you’re after, you really can’t go wrong with the Toyota Tundra. After all, it is one of the most reliable pickup trucks out there. In fact, according to Consumer Reports, most Tundra model years have earned a four or five out of five reliability rating. The only Tundra model that was unable to earn such high marks in terms of reliability were the 2007 and 2002 Toyota Tundra, both of which earned a three out of five reliability rating.

The Tundra has earned some equally high ratings from J.D. Power. The 2021 Toyota Tundra earned a ‘Great’ quality and reliability rating from J.D. Power. Previous model years earned similarly high-reliability ratings from J.D. Power. Though, that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The Toyota Tundra is a pretty reliable truck, after all.

The most common Toyota Tundra problems 

While the Toyota Tundra may be known as a reliable pickup, it does have some problems to contend with. According to Consumer Reports, previous model years have faced issues with the truck’s paint and trim. Other problems cited by Consumer Reports include minor engine issues, trouble with the truck’s climate system, and issues with its brakes.

But the Tundra’s worst problem? CarComplaints.com reports that has to do with the truck’s engine. The worst model years for engine problems are the 2007 Tundra, 2005 Tundra, and the 2011 Tundra, CarComplaints.com added.

But this pickup will last you a seriously long time

Now, you may be wondering, how many miles will a Toyota Tundra actually last? While it might be a reliable truck, reliability and longevity don’t always go hand in hand. Well, according to a study from iSee Cars, you can expect the Tundra to last a pretty long time.

In its study, iSee Cars analyzed more than 15.8 million cars that were sold in 2019. iSee Cars then took that data and used it to find out which models included in the study had the highest percentage of cars that were able to reach 200,000-miles.

Fortunately for the Toyota Tundra, it did pretty well in iSee Cars’ study. In fact, iSee Cars found that the Tundra is the longest-lasting pickup among its segment. An impressive 2.9% of models surpassed 200,000-miles, which is better than average for the full-size truck segment. 

This Tundra managed to hit a million miles

Now, 200,000-miles is nothing to scoff at. But this particular Tundra? It was able to surpass 200,000-miles and hit an astounding one million miles. According to The Drive, this million-mile Tundra’s odometer rolled over to 999,999 in 2019. Owner Aaron Morvant told The Drive that he chose the Tundra because of how reliable it is.

“I heard on the radio that 80% of Toyota’s purchased in the last 20 years were still on the road,” Morvant said. “I needed a truck that was dependable to run as a hotshot, so this was one of those no-brainers.”

Is it worth buying a Toyota Tundra?

You really can’t go wrong with the Tundra. It’s not only reliable, but plenty of models are able to surpass 200,000-miles, which is pretty impressive. So, in the end? Yes, buying a Tundra is probably well worth the spend.
