BMW was one of the first luxury carmakers to embrace the SUV. The BMW X5 was the first, and a long line of performance SUVs followed. All models in the BMW X line are built with a sports car in mind, from the aerodynamics to the near-50/50 weight distribution. BMW now refers to these vehicles as SAVs and SACs – or Sport Activity Vehicles and Sport Activity Coupes – recognizing that “activity” is a more all-encompassing word for BMW X drivers. This reflects BMW’s belief that these vehicles are built for modern life.

How many SAV’s does BMW make? They make a whopping 7 models in their lineup – the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7. The X3 through the X7 models have additional turbocharged M series versions. All X models combine space, style, and performance, and they’re set apart by different platforms, features, and rooflines. Here they are – BMW SUVs ranked from largest to smallest.

The BMW X7 SUV

By far the largest BMW is the BMW X7. In fact, it’s the largest BMW ever built. The X7 has three rows of seating and a powerful 3.0-liter turbo V6 engine putting out 335 hp. It’s built on a brand new platform called the 7 Series platform, which is 203.3 inches long. The X7 also has a giant 90.4 cubic feet of available cargo space with all the seats folded down.

The BMW X5 SUV

The original SUV by BMW, the X5 is the benchmark for the entire X Series. Built on the 5 Series platform, it has a V6 engine and an 8-speed automatic sport transmission. It’s 194.3 inches long with 33.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats up and 72.3 cubic feet with them down, making it the second-largest SAV in the BMW line.

The BMW X6 Sport Activity Coupe

The BMW X6 is slightly longer than the X5 but has significantly less cargo space. It barely looks like an SUV thanks to its coupe roofline and chiseled rear profile. BMW calls it a Sports Activity Coupe. It’s built on the 5 Series platform and is 194.8 inches long, with a maximum cargo space of 59.7 cubic feet.

The BMW X3 SUV

According to J.D. Power & Associates, the most popular BMW SUV is the X3. This is a compact, 5-passenger vehicle built on the 3 Series platform, and it’s high on performance. The X3 has two available turbocharged engines, a four-cylinder and a V6 for plenty of power. The BMW X3 also features rear-wheel drive. When you buy the BMW X3, you’ll be getting 185 inches of length and with 62.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

The BMW X4 SAC

The BMW X4 has a stylish, unconventional appearance that is more coupe than SUV thanks to its low coupe roofline. The turbo engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with manual shift modes and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Built on the 3 Series platform, it is 187.5 inches long, but with a lot less cargo space than the X3 at 50.5 cubic feet.

The BMW X1 SUV

The BMW X1 is a compact SUV is based on the BMW’s 1 Series platform and is 175 inches long. It has 27.1 cubic feet of cargo space, and it expands to 58.7 cubic feet with the seats folded down. It’s powered by a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine.

The BMW X2 SAC

The BMW X2 has a very muscular, sporty exterior and is similar to the X1 in many ways but with a lower roofline and more coupe-like design. Also on a 1 Series platform and with the same turbo engine, the BMW X2 is a bit smaller at 172.2 inches. It also has less cargo space at 21.6 cubic feet, and 50.1 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

With an SUV, or “SAV” lineup as extensive as this, there seems to be a BMW X model for just about everyone looking for that level of luxury.
