How much weight can the ever-popular Ford Bronco tow? What about the Ford Bronco Sport? The Ford Bronco has returned to the American automaker’s lineup and quickly become highly sought after. Between production stoppages and thousands of reservations, it’s tough to find a new Bronco anywhere. Those who can find a Bronco might meet one with a massive upcharge. Many people have one question: Though the Bronco is undoubtedly capable, can it tow a lot of weight?
How much can a standard Ford Bronco tow?
A base model 2022 Ford Bronco is capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds. That number remains the same for both the two and four-door models. It comes with a standard 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine and a 7-speed manual transmission in the two-door model, but a 10-speed automatic in the four-door.
The curb weight in the base model is 4,977 for the manual two-door variant but 5,226 for the automatic four-door model. Though the Bronco can’t tow a pickup truck amount of weight, it can hold its own. Luckily, if you choose, you can get more out of your Ford Bronco. A few different models and packages add to its towing capabilities, though its capacity does not increase.
What optional towing features are available?
Beginning with the second-lowest trim level, Big Bend, the Bronco can receive an optional towing package. It’s titled the Towing Capability package and includes a few different things to improve owners’ towing experience. The same package is available on the Black Diamonds, Outer Banks, Badlands, and Wildtrak models.
For an additional $595, the Towing Capability package includes two items. A 4-pin/7-pin wiring harness prewires and a 2-inch receiver. Though these items do not add to the towing capacity, they do add to the capability. Tools to make it easier to tow are essential, and that’s what this package adds to the Bronco. The Ford Bronco is much more off-road driver than an on-road tower, but the 3,500 pounds is enough for most people.
How much can a Ford Bronco Sport tow?
The base model Ford Bronco Sport can tow up to 2,200 pounds if it is adequately equipped. The Base, Big Bend, and Outer Banks trim levels can tow 2,000 pounds with their 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine when not adequately equipped. To get the most towing capacity out of the Bronco Sport, you’ll need a minimum of the Badlands trim. The Badlands trim happens to be the most expensive, starting at $33,935.
All the trim levels can get the Class II Trailer Tow Package with Trailer Sway Control package, giving them 2,000 pounds of towing capacity. However, only the Badlands trim makes the jump up to 2,200 pounds when adding the package. The package includes a 7-wire harness with 4- and 7-pin connectors, a hitch receiver, a smart trailer tow connector, trailer brake wiring, tow/haul modes, trailer brake controller, and trailer sway control.
The 2022 Ford Bronco and 2022 Ford Bronco Sport aren’t for towing massive amounts of weight. However, combined with their off-road prowess, they’re surprisingly capable. Though you shouldn’t expect the Bronco’s towing capacity to compete with large SUVs or pickup trucks, it’s respectably able to tow over 3,000 pounds. The amounts it can pull are perfect for a small boat, trailer, or whatever else you need on your off-road journey.
