With the return of several classic SUVs in recent years, the Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer join the party for 2022. Jeep recently revealed the 2022 Grand Wagoneer as a concept vehicle. While not available yet for sale, one of the biggest questions is how much the SUV will cost. With four Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer versions, there will be a range of prices.

History of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The Wagoneer was manufactured from the model year 1963 to 1991. The Wagoneer became the Grand Wagoneer in 1984 when the smaller Wagoneer and Cherokee models were first introduced. The early Grand Wagoneer helped introduce luxury features, like air conditioning and a stereo, to the SUV vehicle. It included many firsts, including the first automatic transmission in a 4×4 vehicle.

It had only minor changes during its run and kept the same platform throughout. The last year for the original Grand Wagoneer was thirty years ago, back in 1991. Its price that year was the equivalent of a bit less than $60,000, according to MotorTrend. Its return has been promised and eagerly awaited for many years.

The reveal of the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Jeep just revealed the new short-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer as a concept vehicle, giving the Grand Wagoneer and the Wagoneer taste. There will be two lengths, each for the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. All four will have three rows of seats. The Wagoneer is expected to be more practical and less luxurious than the Grand Wagoneer, although details of the features aren’t yet available.

The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will share a platform and some architecture with the Ram 1500. They will all be manufactured at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant in Michigan. The Grand Wagoneer will continue Jeep’s off-road tradition with three 4×4 systems and an air suspension. The concept version is a plug-in hybrid, but the powertrain options haven’t been announced yet.

The Grand Wagoneer is expected to have off-road capabilities and tow up to 10,000 pounds, as much as a full-size pickup truck. There is a tiny bit of wood around the headlights and roof rack tie-down loops, but the new Wagoneer doesn’t have wood-paneled sides. The Grand Wagoneer will have plenty of luxury features, including large screens and other high-tech features, high-quality materials, and a large panoramic roof. 

The concept version screens include a 12.3-inch driver display, a 12.1-inch touchscreen, a 10.3-inch screen for controls, and a 10.3-inch passenger touchscreen with a privacy film in the glass. The short-wheelbase Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will be available in the summer of 2021, and the long-wheelbase versions will arrive at a later date.

Possible pricing for the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer won’t come cheap, but the luxury and high-tech features and options sound like they’ll make the price worth it. The short-wheelbase Wagoneer is expected to start at about $60,000, while the long-wheelbase Wagoneer will begin at less than $65,000. That prices it at more than its competitors of either length. The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2021 GMC Yukon, and 2020 Ford Expedition start at $50,295, $51,995, and $54,505 respectively.

The Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL, and Ford Expedition Max have starting prices about $2,000 more than their short versions. The short-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer should start at about $75,000, and the long-wheelbase version is expected to start likely around $80,000. Fully loaded, the Grand Wagoneer could jump up to $100,000.

The Grand Wagoneer will go up against the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, 2020 Lincoln Navigator, and 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Those SUVs start at $77,490, $77,480 and $76,945. The long-wheelbase versions of the Escalade ESV and Navigator L start at $80,490 and $86,220, respectively, making the Grand Wagoneer similar in price to its rivals.

While Jeep didn’t go with a retro wood-paneled look for the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, people who have been waiting decades for its return will likely be willing to shell out for its steep price.
