The Alfa Romeo Tonale starts at $44,995 (the Ti trim). It comes in three different trim levels: the Sprint, the Ti, and the Veloce. Ti and Veloce trims will arrive first, followed by the Sprint trim. The Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce starts at $47,495. The PHEV competes in the subcompact luxury SUV vehicle segment. The Alfa Romeo Tonale is one of the few subcompact luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs on the market. The upcoming Dodge Hornet will likely draw inspiration from the Tonale.

The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale uses a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 15.5 kWh battery, and an electric motor to make a massive 285 horsepower and an estimated 350 lb-ft of torque. That’s an amazing power output for its size. It can go from 0-60 miles per hour in about 6.0 seconds.

The Tonale comes with standard all-wheel drive. EPA fuel economy numbers aren’t out yet. That being said, the PHEV has over 30 miles of electric-only driving range. Electric-only driving range is what separates plug-in hybrids from hybrids.

PHEVs are able to store electricity in batteries, then access that electricity to move the wheels of the vehicle without any internal combustion for a certain distance. This is a great way to save money on gas and get the most driving range possible out of a vehicle. Alfa Romeo claims that the 2024 Tonale has an estimated 320 miles of total driving range.

Alfa Romeo offers plenty of great safety and driver assistance features for the Tonale, including Lanesense lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross path detection, and a driver attention alert. Some of the more advanced Tonale safety and driver assistance features include Intelligent Adaptive cruise Contol, Intelligent Speed Control, and a 360-degree camera.

Intelligent adaptive cruise control uses cameras to maintain a target speed and safe following distance between the SUV and the vehicle in front of it. This feature is great for long drives in flowing moderate traffic.

Intelligent Speed Control uses cameras and scanners to make speed suggestions to drivers based on speed limits. This great feature allows drivers to enjoy the power of the Tonale without going overboard and ending up with a speeding ticket. The 360-degree camera feature is ideal for parking in tight spaces and maneuvering in areas with very little room.

The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale comes standard with heated seats. The Italian automaker offers available ventilated seats as well. It also offers Alcantara and techno-leather trimmed seats, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, and interior multi-colored LED lights. Standard features for specific trim levels aren’t out yet, but consumers can sign up for updates on the Alfa Romeo website now.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale hints at what’s to come from the brand

The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a PHEV that hints at the future of the automaker’s new additions to its portfolio. Many Stellantis brands, like Dodge, are focusing on electrification and where to fit into the bright electric future.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale proves that PHEVs can fit in seamlessly with the Italian luxury lineup and be just as desirable (if not more desirable) than their internal combustion engine counterparts. Car and Driver praises the subcompact luxury PHEV’s cabin quality and driving dynamics.
