2022 BMW M850i xDrive Coupe

The 8 Series, in its current guise, debuted in 2018. Initially offered solely as a coupe, with the convertible and four-door Gran Coupe introduced later. In 2022, the 8 Series received a mild tech update and refreshed styling, and the coupe version of BMW’s big grand tourer is available in three trims. There is the 840i, the 840i xDrive, and the top-trim, M850i xDrive. If we want the best BMW has to offer in the 8 Series Coupe, we need to look at the M850i xDrive.

The big coupe gets BMW’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 523 horsepower. The V8’s power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission with three drive modes, paddle shifters, and launch control. The M850i can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds when set up in sport mode and launch control is activated. All of that performance does come at a cost, the first being fuel economy. The EPA rates the M850i at 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The base price of the M850i xDrive is $99,900.

Standard features, technology, and safety

The M850i xDrive is a premium, high-end luxury car and, as such, comes loaded with a lot of standard features. Starting on the outside, BMW offers seven standard colors and six wheel options. 19-inch M Double-spoke wheels with all-season run-flat tires are the default selection with 20-inch wheels of varying styles also available. 

The interior is Merino leather and available in six colors, as standard. The front seats, armrest, and steering wheel are all heated. Accenting all of that leather are three trim options, including two wood shades and a dark-look aluminum. An anthracite headliner completes the interior design. 

Vehicle instrumentation is handled by the new and updated 12.3-inch digital display and a heads-up display. Infotainment is controlled on a separate 10.25-inch central display that includes navigation and powers a 464-watt Harman Kardon surround sound system with 16 speakers. There are also two USB ports for phone pairing and charging. 

Standard safety features include lane departure warning, pre-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front and rear Head Protection System (HPS), a rear-view camera, and LED headlights with laser light high beams. 

Options to fully load an M850i xDrive

BMW offers three high-end metallic paint finishes that add $1,950 to the base price of the 8 Series. The matte finish Frozen Bluestone metallic paint adds $5,000 to the total cost.

On the inside, there is an option for BMW Individual upholstery. That gives the 8 Series a two-tone interior color scheme for an additional $2,000. The material is still Merino leather, but it offers a chance to uniquely customize the cabin’s look. Carbon fiber interior trim adds $300, or there is an option for Piano Black trim for $1,080.

BMW offers a couple of packages for the M850i, and the first selection is the Driving Assistance Professional package for $1,800. This adds active driving assistance through a camera and radar system, parking assistance, a video drive recorder, and a 360-degree 3D surround camera.

Next is the Cooling and High-Performance Tire package for $1,850. This adds black 20-inch wheels, high-performance non-run-flat tires, extended Shadowline exterior trim, a more powerful engine cooling fan, and an engine oil cooler.

Individual options include a carbon-fiber roof ($3000), carbon-fiber exterior trim ($4,100), Alcantara headliner ($650), and glass interior controls ($650). 

Finally, BMW offers several vehicle maintenance programs with the Ultimate Care+ 4 Bundle adding $6,449 to the price. That gives the 8 Series seven years or 125,000 miles of scheduled maintenance and repairs.

In total, a fully loaded 2022 BMW M850i xDrive costs $126,479.

Is a fully loaded BMW 8 Series Coupe worth it?

The short answer is no, but only because the BMW M8 Coupe exists. A fully loaded M850i is just $4,000 less than the M8. A base M8 starts at $130,000 but has an additional 100 horsepower and all the handling and performance you would expect from a BMW M Car.

The only reason to go for the M850i is for the performance. But, if that is what you are after in a big BMW coupe, the M8 does speed and performance better. 

Much like everything car-related, it really depends on your priorities. If you are after the best performance and speed from the 8 Series, opt for the M8. However, if you want a stylish and luxurious GT car that is loaded with technology, choose the 840i xDrive. It is significantly cheaper than the M850i and M8, which gives you plenty left in the budget to play with the options list.
