The Ford F-150 is one of the most popular pickup truck in its class, and for good reason. Ford makes a large, robust, and comfortable truck that comes with six available engines, three cab styles, three cargo bed lengths, and a choice between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive in most trims. With models that focus on towing, off-roading, fuel economy, or comfort, this truck is flexible is enough to meet just about any buyer’s requirements.

But hold on a minute. Depending on how you equip your F-150, you could spend anywhere from $30,000 to over $70,000. Ford lists its base model, the XL, at a starting price of $28,495. What features and amenities do you get for this price? And how much more can you expect to spend to get the kind of F-150 you want? We’ll look at some of the more interesting trim levels of this truck to find out what Ford offers for the price.`

XL – $28,495

The XL is Ford’s nod to the basic work truck. It has a 3.3-liter V6 engine that makes 290 hp with a towing capacity of 7,600 pounds. It’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Buyers can also step up to a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 that makes 325 hp with a maximum tow rating of 9,000 pounds or a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 that makes 375 hp and can tow up to 13,200 pounds. Another option is a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 that delivers 395 horses. All of these engines are mated with an electronic 10-speed automatic transmission.

Rear-wheel drive is standard on this base model, but all-wheel drive is available. It comes standard with a regular cab style and a 6-foot-5-inch bed, but buyers can choose the double or extended cab, as well as a 5-foot-5-inch or 8-foot bed. It’s important to note that the extended cab is available only with either the 5-foot-5-inch or 6-foot-5-inch bed.

Exterior styling for the XL isn’t flashy: a two-bar grille with black nostrils. Inside the XL, a basic AM/FM radio and a 4.2-inch screen are standard. A Wi-Fi hotspot and only a few other conveniences are offered as options at this level. 

The XL has a rearview camera that uses a dynamic hitch assist system to guide the driver in lining up the hitch with a trailer. Standard safety equipment features pre-collision assist with automatic braking.

XLT – $34,510

Buyers can step up to a slightly fancier version of the XL, the XLT. They also will get a bit more chrome on the grille and 17-inch aluminum wheels as standard features.  The standard engine and many of the options are the same as its less expensive sibling.

Ford’s voice-activated infotainment system, Sync 3, is standard on the XLT as is a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot.

But this trim level allows buyers to opt for a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 engine. It cranks out 250 hp and can tow up to 11,500 pounds. 

Lariat – $42,500

The next trim level up from the XLT is the Lariat, and it’s a significant step up in amenities. It has a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6, but buyers can choose the V8. It comes standard with RWD, and AWD is optional.

Only the extended cab and crew cab styles are available at this trim level. Eighteen-inch wheels come standard also. 

The standard Sync 3 infotainment system is enhanced with an 8.0-inch touchscreen. Satellite radio is also standard.

The Lariat-trimmed F-150 also has Ford’s package of driver-assist technologies called Co-Pilot360. It includes lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking.

King Ranch – $52,740/Platinum – $55,270

Ford turns the luxury up another notch with the King Ranch and the Platinum trims. Both versions are available only with a crew cab and the V8 engine.

The King Ranch’s exterior has two-tone paint, plenty of chrome, and LED headlights and box lighting. Heated seats front and back, dual-zone climate control, and wood trim are all standard interior features.

While just as comfortable as the King Ranch, the Platinum has a more urban feel with 20-inch aluminum wheels, power running boards, and LED side mirror spotlights. Inside, the Platinum F-150 has a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel and aluminum trim.

Limited – $67,485

At the top of the line-up is the Limited, which is available in both the double and crew cab styles. It rolls on 22-inch wheels and a twin-panel moonroof is standard in the crew cab.

The F-150 Limited also has nearly every convenience feature that usually optional on lesser trims. Standard features include a remote tailgate release, a 360-degree camera with split-view display, and a 10-speaker sound system.

Raptor – $53,205

The F-150 Raptor is pretty much in its own class thanks to its off-road racing capabilities. This bird of prey runs on a high-output EcoBoost 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 that makes 450 hp, which is a change from last year’s V8 engine. It has a widened  F-150  body and is available in all-wheel drive only. The Raptor features a cruise control system that is designed for off-road terrain.

Buyers can choose between a double or extended cab. Front bucket seats are standard, but Recaro sport seats are available. But it seems as if truck shoppers who want a Raptor might be more concerned about the driving fun that this upscale off-road beast offers than comfort and convenience.
