How Much Does It Cost to Insure a Supercar?
Whether it’s a supercar or a hypercar or any other exotic sports car, these types of vehicles will be fast, they will be stylish, and of course, they will be very expensive. Furthermore, while the price tag of these cars is usually in the millions, that’s not the only thing that’s expensive about them. Here’s a look at how much it’ll cost to insure a supercar, and unsurprisingly, it’s going to be a lot.
The most expensive cars in the world
When it comes to supercars, a price tag in the millions is just the start of it. One of the main reasons these cars are so expensive is how rare they are. Usually, automakers will make a limited run of a few of them. That’s precisely the case with supercars like the Aston Martin Valkyrie. Not only does it have a limited run of about 150 units, but each unit starts at about $3 million apiece.
Another example of these expensive and exclusive cars is the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37. Lamborghini is only making 63 units of this particular car, and each will start at about $3.6 million. However, that is to be expected as Lambo fans are used to Lamborghini making very limited runs of its exotic cars.
However, one of the more extreme examples of this practice comes from the Pagani Huayra Tricolore. Pagani is only making three units of this car, and each will start at about $6.5 million.
How much it costs to insure a supercar
Insurance is a complicated business with a lot of math involved, but unsurprisingly, it’s pretty expensive to insure a supercar. As Below Invoice wrote, on average, insurance for a supercar can range from a pretty cheap $1,500 a year to $35,000 a year or more. More expensive hypercars will likely have an even higher premium, but it varies a lot.
For example, as many folks know, young male drivers typically get higher premiums than other demographics. Combined with a Lambo, that could mean some very high premiums. Below Invoice wrote that, in one particular case, an 18-year-old man bought a brand-new Lambo, and he paid $2,700 a month insuring it. This meant that he spent $32,400 a year on car insurance alone.
That being said, high insurance premiums aren’t a guarantee, even for a supercar. For example, while a Ferrari will cost, on average, about $8,000 a year to insure, many drivers have premiums that are significantly cheaper than that. Below Invoice says that one owner paid $255,000 for his Ferrari, and he’s only paying $1,608 a year in car insurance for it.
Getting your supercar insured
Although there are insurance carriers that specialize in exotic cars, folks can get insurance from a more generic insurance company, too. However, according to Car Insurance Comparison, one of the most important things to do when shopping for car insurance for a supercar is to shop around.
This is because insurance carriers see supercars as very risky, and many may not be willing to insure them. Companies willing to insure a supercar will likely charge a lot because they will be paying a lot otherwise.
In any case, a supercar’s insurance price should be a good indicator of whether you should buy a supercar or not. If you can afford to pay $6.5 million for a car, then you’re likely not going to care how much it costs to insure that car.
