One of the most gorgeous sedans continues its legacy into next year as the 2022 Lexus IS 500, and with it comes the new configurator, which recently went live on Lexus’ website. What starts as fairly affordable gets expensive pretty fast, and for good reason. Lexus comfort is no joke, and when it’s coupled with capable suspension and an intimidating powerplant, it’s difficult to fault the car for nearly anything. All told, the IS 500 can cost more than $60,000, and we’re going to see where exactly that money goes.

2022 Lexus IS 500 5-Liter V8 powerplant isn’t messing around

Under the hood of this beastly sedan is a roaring 5-liter V8 pumping 472 naturally-aspirated horsepower to the rear wheels. This gets the car to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds on 19-inch Enkei wheels, with a 3,891-pound curb weight. Quad exhaust exits the back with stacked tailpipes, and the car manages to get 25 mpg. The engine is all aluminum with dual overhead camshafts and Yamaha-designed cylinder heads, and titanium valves. It uses direct injection and revs to 7,300. In other words, it’s all about performance.

Lexus offers limited trims and packages

The 2022 Lexus IS 500 has a couple of trims, the most expensive being the F Sport Performance Premium Edition. It starts at $61,000 but opting for the Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0 external paint bumps up the MSRP to $62,670. There aren’t any packages available for this trim, but several accessories are up for grabs, with $25 key gloves, all the way up to $1,100 carbon fiber mirror caps. 

The 2022 IS 500 F Sport Performance trim starts at $56,500 and comes with most of the features of the Premium, minus a few goodies. Namely, the Premium has a 10.3-inch touchscreen, a more powerful sound system, aluminum control knobs, and a navigation system. In terms of performance, both trim levels have a limited-slip differential, Yamaha rear performance dampers, and adaptive suspension.

2022 Lexus IS 500 safety features are identical, except for the intuitive parking assist with auto braking and rear cross-traffic braking. This feature is available on the F Sport Performance and the Premium, but with the Premium also comes the panoramic view mirror. Otherwise, both trims have pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane tracing and departure assist, all-speed dynamic cruise control, and Lexus Enform Safety and Service Connect, included for the first three and 10 years, respectively. 

How much is a fully loaded 2022 Lexus IS 500?

For the 2022 Lexus IS, 500 F Sport Performance Premium including all accessories sold by Lexus, out the door cost is $66,215. That’s not bad at all, but for practicality’s sake, the F Sport Performance is plenty for the $56,500 MSRP. The margin between the two trims is minute, and frankly, there isn’t enough material for discussion. Car and Driver pegs it as responsive, confidence-inspiring through a corner, and providing informative feedback through the steering. It’s also a comfortable daily driver with a quiet cabin. The last question is if it’s enough to warrant $56,500?
