The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is a new electric SUV from Mazda that’s…well, interesting, to say the least. It’s based on the popular Mazda CX-30, which might make you think it’s going to be a great electric vehicle. Yet the MX-30 only has a range of 100 miles, making it a less-than-ideal option if you need something for regular daily use. Still, Mazda’s foray into electric vehicles isn’t all bad, and if you have a second car as Mazda assumes you do, you just might be inclined to consider it. If that’s the case, here’s how much the 2022 Mazda MX-30 will cost you.

How much is the 2022 Mazda MX-30?

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 price starts at $34,645. According to Edmunds, its engine can make up to 143 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. It also points out that the MX-30’s electric engine isn’t quite as powerful as some of its other competitors, such as the Chevy Bolt. The Chevy Bolt, for example, makes 200 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. When you take into account the MX-30’s poor range, you might think the MX-30 had better have a quality interior.

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 has a comfortable interior and a smooth ride. However, the back seats are somewhat cramped, with Edmunds saying that anyone taller than 5’9″ would have a hard time fitting back there. In addition, the front doors need to be opened for the rear doors to be accessible, which is an interesting and perhaps inconvenient design, especially if you have a kid that forgot their backpack.

How is the MX-30’s tech?

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 doesn’t have some of the advanced technology other electric vehicles often come with, but it does have the basics that you’ll need. It has a touchscreen infotainment systems well as climate controls, and sustainable and recycled materials. It also comes with the standard safety equipment like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and blind-spot warning.

In addition, the 2022 Mazda MX-30 has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus keyless entry, a premium sound system, and a camera system that allows you to get a view of the surroundings of your SUV.

Is the MX-30 price worth it?

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 price is high for an SUV that only gets 100 miles on a single charge. It would make more sense if the MX-30 was an entry-level electric SUV with a price point that might attract those who could deal with the short range. Yet with the MX-30’s competitors being similarly priced – or cheaper – with extended range, it doesn’t see likely that the MX-30 is going to be a best-seller. The Chevy Bolt EUV is $33,000, and its range is more than double that of the Mazda MX-30, at 247 miles on a single charge.  And the 2022 Mazda MX-30 costs just $5,000 less than the 2021 Tesla Model 3, but the Model 3 gets 262 miles of range on a single charge.

Still, the 2022 Mazda MX-30 has a comfortable and stylish interior similar to the Mazda CX-30. It comes with white and gray seats, though you can upgrade for darker seats. The exterior of the two SUVs is different, with the MX-30 having a smaller grille and body-colored doors. The MX-30 also has a power moonroof, leather steering wheel, and heated front seats. If you fall in love with the MX-30 interior, and you’re a huge Mazda fan, perhaps you’ll be willing to deal with constantly recharging your electric SUV.
