Currently, Subaru offers six trim levels for the 2022 Subaru Legacy. That’s up only $100 from last year and really speaks to what a value the 2022 Legacy is. However, only one of those lands you a fully loaded 2022 Subaru Legacy sedan, and its $37,155 MSRP may not be worth the price of a new Honda Civic Type R. Here, we’re going to find out if it is.

A fully loaded 2022 Subaru Legacy costs $37,155

First, there’s three notable changes to a fully loaded 2022 Subaru Legacy. The brand has added a 180-degree front-view camera to aid in parking (no, you can’t use it as a dash camera), as well as much nicer Nappa leather upholstery. The third is a bit of a downer, as the price of a fully loaded 2022 Subaru Legacy climbs by $150. But, for that extra $150 you’re getting everything the Legacy has to offer.

Obviously, the Legacy being a Subaru, that means standard AWD. But the brand didn’t skimp on the niceties either. First, there’s the driver-assist tech, which you’ll be getting all of. That means blind-spot, lane change, and automatic braking assists. Oh, and adaptive cruise control. You’re also getting a heated steering wheel and a Harmon Kardon sound system. Subaru also offers Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

Should you buy a Subaru Legacy?

Now, what we didn’t tell you is that much of that long list is standard. In truth, the only thing the fully loaded 2022 Subaru Legacy Touring XT adds to the pile over the Limited XT trim is the front camera and leather. Now, if it’s us, we’re skipping the $37,155 fully loaded trim and going down market, but not by much. Instead, we’d opt for the 2022 Subaru Legacy Limited XT, which starts at $35,455.

That still nets you the Legacy’s more powerful 260 hp H4 engine and, well, pretty much all of the cool stuff. In addition to the Legacy’s standard features, you get the updated Starlink infotainment system found in the new Subaru Outback, and the Harmon Kardon stereo along with it. For those of you in cold climates, the heated steering wheel is also included here.

AWD gives the Legacy a boost, but midsize sedan competition is stiff

Frankly, in such a competitive segment, the $2,000 or so you save by going down to the Limited trim is worth it. That’s especially true when you consider how stiff the competition from Honda’s Accord and Toyota’s Camry is. While the fully loaded Legacy might be more than you need, the Limited XT trim strikes the sweet spot that helps the midsize sedan stay competitive.
