Subaru makes a lot of great cars, and the 2021 model year is bringing a lot of great Subies to the fold. Subaru is usually better-known for making SUVs, but it also has good sedans to offer too. Here’s a look at the 2021 Subaru Legacy, what’s new about it, and how much it should cost. 

What’s new with the 2021 Subaru Legacy

Like Planet Subaru reported, Subaru has a five-year plan for the Legacy, and Subaru introduces a new generation every five years. The latest generation of the Legacy came out last year with the 2020 Legacy. As a result, for all intents and purposes, the 2021 Legacy isn’t that different from last year’s model year. 

With that being said, Planet Subaru wrote that the 2020 Legacy came with massive improvements over the last generation of the Legacy. Additionally, as MotorTrend reported, the 2021 Legacy will have a few minor changes when compared to its 2020 model year. For example, Subaru’s impressive list of standard smart safety features gets even longer with the 2021 Legacy as it’ll now come standard with steering-responsive LED headlights. 

On top of that, the 2021 Legacy will also have a rear-seat reminder system and a seat belt reminder system as standard. These safety features, in particular, are geared toward helping families stay safe, as rear-seat reminder systems can help drivers avoid hot car deaths. Furthermore, MotorTrend said that the 2021 Legacy will also get a brand-new paint option, “Brilliant Bronze Metallic.” 

How much the 2021 Subaru Legacy will cost

While those are some of the many minor changes to the standard 2021 Legacy, Subaru still offers plenty of options and trims. In that regard, Subaru has upgraded the offerings of a few trims too. For example, Car and Driver said that while the standard 2021 Legacy will get a dual 7.0-inch touchscreen, every Legacy model above the Premium trim will get an 11.6-inch touchscreen instead. 

As for pricing, MotorTrend reported that the 2021 Legacy should start at about $24,000, and its most expensive trim, the Touring XT trim, will start at about $37,000. These price points represent a slight price hike. Compared to last year’s standard Legacy, the 2021 Legacy is about $175 more expensive. Compared to last year’s Legacy XT trims, the 2021 Legacy XT trims are about $275 more expensive.

When we can expect it

As for options, Subaru offers several options, and some of them are only available for certain trims. For example, Car and Driver said that the Legacy Premium will have two option packages. One of them will add even more smart safety features, such as blind-spot detection and a rear cross-traffic detection system for a $1,000 price tag. The other option for the Premium trim costs about $2,600, and it’ll add a moonroof and a navigation system.

The Sport and Limited trims also have their own options and packages, according to Car and Driver. For about $2,250, customers can add reverse automatic emergency braking as an additional safety feature to their 2021 Legacy. For about $2,000, customers can add a driver distraction mitigation system as well as a heated steering wheel to their 2021 Legacy.

While these are just some of the changes and additions to the Legacy, the 2020 Legacy is significantly different than its past model years to begin with. As a result, the 2021 Legacy is significantly more different than every other Legacy to date. As for when the 2021 Legacy will arrive at Subaru dealerships, MotorTrend reported that it’s slated to be available starting in October 2020.
