It’s been five years since Nissan officially got rid of the Xterra and we’re still pretty bummed about it. Sure, the Xterra had its flaws but its rugged charm and performance capabilities made it one of the more compelling options in the SUV market. What the experts had to say about the 2015 Xterra 

Consumer Reports is one of the most helpful guides when it comes to car reliability. CR evaluates a car’s predicted reliability rating based on its exhaustive testing across 17 potential trouble areas. These include the vehicle’s engine, transmission, and electrical system. The 2015 Xterra performed well in CR’s tests and it gave the SUV a four out of five for reliability. Although, CR did note that the Xterra’s most common problem areas have to do with its in-car electronics and paint the trim.

J.D. Power also gave the 2015 Xterra an above-average dependability rating. The Xterra got high marks for its overall quality and its resale value. J.D. Power also gave the Xterra an average score for its driving experience. Really there are no major problems with the Xterra, plus it’s an affordable vehicle to maintain.

What it’s like to drive the Xterra 

The Xterra is still a popular option on the road because it’s smooth enough for daily driving but has great off-roading capabilities. This SUV gets its power from a forceful 4.0-liter V6 that produces 261-horsepower. Generally speaking, the Xterra is engaging and quick. Keep in mind that the Xterra is a truck-based SUV so it’s a stiffer ride compared to a car-based one like the Nissan Rogue. Because of this, the Xterra is better suited for those who need to haul heavy cargo along with going off-road.

Base models are good for hitting the trails but the Pro-4X trim is even better. Performance-wise, you should also know that fuel efficiency isn’t one of the Xterra’s strong suits. The Xterra gets a combined 17 mpg, which is below average for the compact SUV class. 

On the inside

The Xterra has a handsome-looking interior but it’s heavy on the plastic finishings. There’s plenty of space on the inside to comfortably seat five people. The Xterra’s seats aren’t the most supportive though. 

As far as interior tech features go, the 2015 Xterra did benefit from a few modern upgrades before Nissan got rid of it. The base models come with an auxiliary cable port and Bluetooth connection. For more connection offerings, look for the upper-level trims that are equipped with NissanConnect’s infotainment system which includes satellite radio and smartphone integration.
