Its reliability data is gathered via an annual survey that encourages Consumer Reports members to report on any serious issues their vehicle has faced in the last year. In its most recent survey, Consumer Reports collected responses on over 329,000 vehicles. That data was then used to determine how reliable 2021 model year vehicles will be, the 2021 Toyota Tacoma included.

So, just how reliable can you expect the 2021 Toyota Tacoma to be? Well, unfortunately, it’s not expected to be the most reliable pickup out there. But, according to Consumer Reports, it’s also not expected to be the most unreliable pickup on the market this year. In fact, Consumer Reports gave it a three out of five predicted reliability rating, which is fairly average in terms of reliability.

Such a score shouldn’t be all that surprising, though. Save for the 2020 Toyota Tacoma, which earned a five out of five reliability rating from Consumer Reports, the Toyota Tacoma’s reliability ratings tend to fluctuate. While plenty of models earned a near-perfect reliability rating, a number of model years only earned a three out of five reliability rating.

What J.D. Power has to say about the Toyota Tacoma

Unfortunately, J.D. Power has yet to post reliability ratings for the 2021 Toyota Tacoma. That doesn’t mean, however, that previous model years aren’t worth taking a look back on. J.D. Power gave the 2020 Toyota Tacoma a ‘Great’ quality and reliability rating, which could point to an equally high reliability rating for the 2021 Toyota Tacoma. J.D. Power also gave the 2019 model a ‘Great’ quality and reliability rating. 

Taking a look at its standard warranty

While reliability ratings are certainly important, it’s also worth understanding what kind of warranty the 2021 Toyota Tacoma comes standard with. That way, if something does go wrong with the Tacoma, you can have a good idea of whether or not it’s covered by the Tacoma’s standard warranty.

Fortunately, all new Toyota Tacoma models come standard with a 36-month/36,000-mile limited warranty. Also included is a 60-months/60,000-miles powertrain warranty that covers things like the vehicle’s engine, transmission, drive system, and so on. Sixty months and unlimited miles of rust through coverage is included as standard too, which is very good news for Tacoma shoppers. 

Is the Toyota Tacoma reliable?

All in all, you can expect the 2021 Toyota Tacoma to be fairly reliable. While it didn’t earn the highest reliability scores this year, it certainly didn’t earn low enough scores to make it a pickup worth avoiding.
