The 2 Series is one of the best luxury cars you can buy for under $40k. There are two flavors to choose from in this lineup. The standard 230i model gets its power from an efficient turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 248 horsepower. This model is also available with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic.
The 230i is both strong and fuel-efficient. But there are also a few other powertrains to choose from that offer more power. Next up is the first-ever Gran Coupe trim levels, which include the 228i and M235i models. These variants have a 2.0-liter turbo-four linked to an eight-speed automatic. The turbo-four in the 228i model generates 228-hp, and the one in the M235i has 301-hp.
There is also a high-performance option available in the 2 Series lineup. The M240i features a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that has 335-hp. And in Car and Driver’s instrumented testing, the M240i can go from 0-to-60 mph in 4.4 seconds. That’s nearly a full second faster compared to the base model.
Along with its many performance advantages, the 2 Series also earns praise for its elegant, driver-focused cabin. The 2-Series offers the luxury we expect from BMW, and its tech offerings are pretty satisfying too. Many advanced safety features come standard on the 2 Series, and its infotainment system is easy to use.
2020 2 Series reliability ratings
Overall, the 2 Series uses a series of time-tested components with little in the way of major reliability issues. Valve cover gasket problems carry over from the N55, creating non-terminal oil leaks. And as always, water pump problems will have you at the mechanic’s shop every 60,000 miles or so. Overall, J.D. Power gave 2 Series an above-average score based on its 3-year-old car methodology.
Other model years to consider
Overall, the 2 Series has received solid reliability scores since BMW officially introduced it in 2014. According to CR, the 2016 and 2019 model years are the most reliable. Plus, owner satisfaction ratings are also high. BMW 2 Series owners are most satisfied with how their vehicle performs and with its style. Simply put, the 2 Series is a well-rounded luxury model.
