Nissan is known for its dependable, quality vehicles. Its smaller compact SUV, the Nissan Rogue, boasts a low sticker price and a variety of modern features. But is the Nissan Rogue a reliable vehicle? When compared to other new choices, will the Nissan Rogue keep you satisfied for years to come?

Is the new Nissan Rogue reliable?

Using survey data and expert knowledge, Consumer Reports gives new vehicles a predicted reliability rating, which allows potential buyers to see possible trouble spots and dependability problems. In the case of the new 2020 Nissan Rogue, Consumer Reports gives it a good predicted reliability rating of four (out of five). The current 2019 Nissan Rogue receives the same predicted reliability score, with both model years using past data to determine potential trouble areas for new buyers. 

While areas like the engine, fuel system, electric system, suspension, and exhaust seem to offer the most reliability, the Nissan Rogue does have a history of experiencing problems in other areas. Owners of older Rogue models have reported problems with the climate system, body integrity, power equipment, and transmission. These reported problems, however, seem to be limited to older Rogue models, ranging from 2008-2015.

In fact, when looking at the rankings of the 2019 Rogue‘s owner-reported problems, there are only two areas that did not receive a perfect reliability score: power equipment and in-car electronics. 

Where the Nissan Rogue excels (and where it falls behind)

Consumer Reports gave both the 2019 and 2020 Nissan Rogue the same, decent overall score of 75 (out of 100). In the road test, the 2020 Nissan Rogue scored a 74 out of 100, gaining perfect scores for its transmission, access, usability, and climate system. It received good, four-out-of-five scores in braking, ride comfort, and rear-seat comfort. The experts at Consumer Reports found the 2020 Nissan Rogue to stand “out as an easy-to-drive, family-friendly vehicle.” The road test proved that the Rogue is larger and more refined than ever. The Rogue also comes standard with Nissan’s suite of safety features and an impressive warranty.

While the Rogue may prove to be a reliable SUV, that doesn’t mean all customers are satisfied with their choice. In fact, Consumer Reports gives the 2019 Nissan Rogue a poor customer satisfaction score of two (out of five), with only 63% of current customers reporting that they would buy the same vehicle again. Its predicted customer satisfaction rating for the 2020 model totes the same low score, claiming that customers will be most satisfied with styling and comfort, but least satisfied with its overall value.

How it stacks up among the competition

Consumer Reports ranks both the 2019 and 2020 Nissan Rogue as seventh-best among 23 new compact SUVs. Ranked above the Nissan Rogue with higher overall scores are the Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, and Honda CR-V. But are these vehicles more reliable? While the Mazda CX-5 has a perfect five-out-of-five score in reliability, the Forester’s rating falls behind the Rogue at three (out of five). Even the Honda CR-V received a low-reliability rating of three (out of five). So while some vehicles may score higher in other areas like value or on the test drive, the Nissan Rogue may be more reliable than most of the competition.

The experts over at U.S. News ranks the 2020 Nissan Rogue as tenth among compact SUVs, but that’s mostly due to its lower scores in performance. In regards to U.S. News’ and J.D. Power’s reliability score of the Rogue, it receives a ranking of above-average. But according to J.D. Power & Associates rankings – which are compiled from hundreds of thousands of owners’ opinions on “quality, dependability, performance, depreciation” – the current 2019 Nissan Rogue ranks fifth among all SUVs of the same model year.
