The 2021 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine. With 12,560 pounds of towing capacity and 480 lb-ft of torque, that’s not bad. It also gets 260 horsepower. The max payload is noted at 2,040 pounds.

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has an EPA-estimated 22 miles per gallon in the city and 32 on the highway. Ram says the EcoDiesel V6 is a “remarkably quiet, incredibly capable and efficient workhorse.”

Here is how the EcoDiesel lines up against some other diesel trucks. The 2020 Ford F-150 has an 11,500-pound maximum available towing rating. The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is 9,300 pounds. The GMC Sierra 1500 is 9,1000 pounds.

As with any truck, the RAM 1500 EcoDiesel will last a long time with proper care and maintenance. If you take home the 2021 truck with the EcoDiesel from the local dealership and take care of it, it will likely last up to 300,000 miles. In theory, diesel engines should last longer than their gasoline counterparts. The University of Michigan did some research about diesel vs. gasoline automobiles. Back in 2015, things were not as advanced, but the results were interesting.

For trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 2500, the average mileage per gallon was 13 for gas and 15 for diesel. The price for the vehicle was $34,278, and $43,323 for the diesel option. The average fuel cost for the Silverado was about 7% more over three years of ownership.

For a Dodge Ram 2500, the mileage was 13/15 again. The price was $36,170 for the gasoline and $44,700. For the Ram 2500, the cost of diesel fuel over five years was 8% less. Should anything go wrong, the Ram brand offers a three-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

What are some similar trucks to the Ram 1500?

Similar to the RAM 1500 EcoDiesel is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado, which gets 33 miles per gallon on the highway, and a 3.0L Duramax diesel. Similarly, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD has a 6.6L Duramax diesel V8. It gets 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. The price starts at $48,585 but gets more expensive as you go.

Since the Silverado is also a heavy-duty truck, it is exempt from sharing fuel economy statistics. But the Silverado can tow up to 18,500 pounds for the 2500HD and 20,000 pounds for the 3500HD.

The Ford F-150 is one of the more popular trucks available. The Ford F-150 3.0L, Power Stroke diesel, is just behind that with 29 miles per gallon. The diesel V6 option is only available on the XL trims and up. It also costs about $5,000 extra. But don’t worry, it’ll tow 12,100 pounds with the max trailer tow package, so it can also tow houses or horses.
