While the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has an undeniable amount of hype surrounding it, most folks focus on two main areas: cost and range. However, since the Mach-E is a mass-market vehicle, it also needs to be safe enough to drive daily. Additionally, with so many people considering turning toward electric cars, safety will become a big topic of conversation moving forward.

Thankfully, a new report by Consumer Reports covering the IIHS’ latest testing shows very positive results. That’s because this electric crossover became a Top Safety Pick, easily acing six different crash evaluations in the process.

Is the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E safe?

In short, yes. The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E aced all of the IIHS’ crash safety tests. According to Consumer Reports, this includes testing for driver and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints.

Aside from just testing this EVs overall structure, the tests also focused on its headlights and crash prevention systems. The combination of all of these tests is what landed the model the Top Safety Pick award.

According to Consumer Reports, the IIHS found that the Premium, GT, and First Edition trim levels had excellent headlamps. However, the lower Select and California Route 1 trims got a “Marginal” rating for their LED lamps.

Part of the concern surrounding EVs has to do with them catching fire. However, the IIHS reportedly told Consumer Reports that the Ford never caught fire even during the most brutal tests. Furthermore, the car’s battery pack reportedly didn’t even heat up close enough to catch fire.

How much does this EV cost?

If you’re looking at buying a 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, you’ve got a couple of flavors available to you. It is also worth noting that each of the prices we’ll discuss is eligible for a $7,500 tax credit. However, this will disappear eventually once Ford sells enough electric vehicles.

The base trim level is called the Select, and it’ll cost you $42,985 to start. For this, you get the standard range battery pack with one single electric motor in the ear. This effectively makes the crossover rear-wheel drive. In terms of range, we’re looking at an estimate of around 230 miles.

From there, you can jump to the Premium model, which starts at $47,000. However, in this case, you can option an all-wheel-drive setup with a second motor up front. An optional extended battery pack will also up the range to an estimated 270 miles. However, keep in mind that the bigger battery and AWD add $7,700 to its price.

Lastly, we’ve got the California Route 1 for $49,800. Unlike the lower trims, this one is only available with the extended battery and rear-wheel drive. Additionally, you get a unique set of aesthetic extras.

Is the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E fast?

As of writing, the fastest version of the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E you can buy is the one featuring a dual-motor setup. According to MotorTrend, this gives you around 428 lb-ft. During its testing, MotorTrend found that this version of the EV reached 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 13.4 seconds at 103.5 mph.

However, later on this year, and even faster GT trim is set to arrive. While it will undoubtedly carry a premium, it should be the genuinely sporty version of this Mustang we’ve been waiting for.
