When a vehicle has a BMW badge, many consumers automatically recognize the automaker’s reputation for luxury, performance, and quality. So when it comes to the 2020 BMW X2, you might assume the subcompact SUV brings top-level amenities in each of those categories automatically.

However, this luxury model does seem to be missing a few key features, and we wanted to see if the BMW X2 measures up in safety as well as it does in luxury and performance.

A healthy roster of safety standards

Not much has changed for the 2020 BMW X2, outside of the now-standard 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen. In terms of standard safety equipment at each trim level, there’s plenty on the menu. Automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane-departure warning all come as standard.

There is a suite of standard airbags, offering front, side, head, and knee-level protection. Seatbelt pretensioners and child safety LATCH are also entry-level features. ABS brakes and stability control come with every BMW X2 trim level, as well.

Connectivity standard equipment

Every BMW X2 will come with the company’s ConnectedDrive services and navigation. Having the ability to connect and navigate without taking your eyes off the road is essential for safe driving in today’s connected environment.

You will also have Apple CarPlay integration, but unlike most vehicles on the market in 2020, it’s only a one-year subscription. Those with Android devices will not be happy since the X2 does not offer Android Auto connectivity.

Available driver assistance features

The standard suite of safety features is pretty extensive, but there are a few extras for the BMW X2 that you can only get as optional extras. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go technology, for example, is an option. Consumers can level up in packages and trims to get parallel parking assistants as well. One driver aid not available at all for the X2 this year is blind-spot monitoring.

How the NHTSA and IIHS rate the BMW X2

The NHTSA hasn’t officially crash-tested the 2020 BMW X2. However, the IIHS has weighed in on last year’s model and ranked the X2 as a top safety pick. Considering no changes affect the model for this year, the IIHS cites this rating applies to the 2020 variation as well.

How Consumer Reports rates the overall safety of the BMW X2

Consumer Reports uses data from actual vehicle owners in addition to their expert and tech-based knowledge. The Consumer Reports teams also takes vehicles out on the road and through extensive driving tests, to evaluate performance in adverse conditions.

The BMW X2 earned high marks in routine and emergency handling, with four out of five stars for each category. Emergency handling is measured in swerving at high speeds to simulate a driver trying to avoid an obstacle in the roadway.

The X2 successfully and safely handled at speeds up to 53 mph. In avoidance maneuver testing and braking in wet and dry conditions, the X2 also performs well. Overall, the experts at Consumer Reports score the BMW X2 a 77 out of a possible 100.

BMW has a reputation for reliability, quality, and luxury. Based on the reviews and rankings, the luxury automaker does a pretty good job in the safety categories too.

When it comes to the 2020 X2, you can have peace of mind knowing many of the must-have safety features are available, and many come standard. Despite not much else changing for this year’s model, along with the absence of a few extras, the BMW X2 is worth a look if safety is a key factor in making your purchasing decisions.
