The 2020 Hyundai Sonata is definitely a car that should be on your list if you’re shopping for a family car. Hyundai has re-invented the sedan with an all-new design with excellent proportions that give it a more coupe-like look. The 2020 Sonata features a pronounced front grille and a rounded roofline that blends seamlessly with the rear spoiler, and under the hood is plenty of power to give the sedan a little extra punch.

Overall, it’s been chosen as one of the best cars for families and is a great pick for drivers looking for a practical five-door vehicle that’s a little bit fun to drive. Of course, when you’re talking about a family sedan, safety is the top priority. But how safe is the Hyundai Sonata?

Safety features in the Hyundai Sonata

Every 2020 Hyundai Sonata has standard active and passive safety features. Electronic stability control with traction control assist help keep drivers in control in a variety of road conditions. The Sonata has an anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability management, and a tire pressure monitoring system to avoid blowouts.

It has a full suite of airbags, including advanced dual front airbags with an occupant classification system that detects people’s weight for the proper airbag deployment, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags for both the front and rear passengers, and a driver’s knee airbag.

One reason the Hyundai Sonata is so popular with families is the safety features designed specifically for children. The Sonata has standard rear child safety locks and a power window lockout button. The fact that there are rear side impact airbags for passengers and an occupant classification system in front is important for parents concerned about their children’s safety.

Hyundai driver-assist safety advances

Driver-assist technologies have been at the forefront of Hyundai safety research for many years. These technologies keep everyone on the road safer – not only yourself and the passengers of your vehicle but everyone else traveling with you on the road. Some driver-assist technologies simply warn you if a crash is possible, while others take control of the vehicle and either steer or brake for you in case of emergency. The technology covers everything from helping you park at the grocery store to avoiding a head-on collision on the highway.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata features a very long list of the latest driver-assist technologies, and plenty of them are all standard on all models. The Sonata features forward collision-avoidance assist with passenger detection, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, driver attention warning, and parking collision assist.

This intelligent vehicle also features blind-spot detection and blind-spot avoidance as well as parking collision avoidance assist and rear collision avoidance assist. It even has smart cruise control that will keep you safe in heavy traffic with its start and stop abilities.

Because the 2020 Hyundai Sonata is packed with safety features, it has won multiple awards. In addition to picking up MotorWeek’s 2020 Driver’s Choice Award for Best Family Sedan, it has grabbed top pick awards from the U.S.’s most prestigious sources.

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety awarded the 2020 Sonata a “Top Safety Pick” when equipped with LED projector headlights. This is based on structure and safety cage strength, passenger injury measures, passenger restraints, and driver injury measures. The 2020 Sonata Hybrid also received the same safety award.

You can feel confident that the Hyundai Sonata is actively working to keep you and your passengers safe. With a five-star safety rating from the NHSTA and as an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2020, the Sonata is one of the safest cars on the road.
