Ford recently introduced the F-Series Super Duty Tremor package for 2020. Truck fans are no doubt familiar with the popular desert-racing-inspired Raptor package for the F-150. The Tremor is not a Raptor, rather it is a heavy-duty, off-road-capable truck based on the Super Duty 3/4-ton F-250 and single wheel one-ton F-350 platform powered by either a 7.3-liter gasoline V8 or a 6.7-liter diesel V8.

According to MotorTrend, Ford executives understand that a large majority of Super Duty owners modify their trucks soon after taking delivery to make them more off-road capable. Larger tires, improved suspension and lift kits top the list of upgrades. Ford is looking to streamline this process for their fans by making an off-road-ready Super Duty available as a factory option. The Tremor package upgrades the standard Super Duty with 35-inch all-terrain tires, skid plates, retractable running boards, progressive rate springs, twin-tube piston dampers, electronic locking rear differential, and a rock-crawl setting available in the selectable drive modes.

Ford has not yet released price data for the Tremor package.

Ram Power Wagon

Dodge is no stranger to heavy-duty off-road trucks having introduced its Power Wagon in 1945. It hasn’t been available every year since then but it has been around for the last few years. Dodge has stepped up its game with the newest 2020 Ram Power Wagon, which according to Car and Driver is based on its 3/4-ton Ram 2500 chassis. 

Previous versions of the Ram Power Wagon have been equipped with four-wheel drive, 17-inch wheels, off-road shocks, a 12,000-pound front-mounted winch, and 6.4-liter gasoline V8. Adding to the Ram Power Wagon’s off-road capability is electronic locking front and rear differentials providing power to all four tires in slippery conditions, and an electronic anti-roll bar disconnect to increase suspension travel in rugged terrain. 

2019 Ram Power Wagon prices start at $53,150.

Common traits

Both the Ram Power Wagon and the Tremor are capable of tackling the most rugged terrain and would be suited to hauling firewood to remote campsites or towing a travel trailer to the most scenic destinations. They would also be able to put in the work required day in and day out to accomplish nearly any task required on the farm, ranch or construction site.

Both trucks are available with 3/4-ton chassis, four-wheel drive and electronic locking differentials to tow or haul heavy loads through slick or rugged conditions. Powerful gasoline engines are available across both platforms ensuring performance at highway speeds and the torque necessary to handle heavy loads during slow, technical maneuvers. 

Seating for six people is standard across both platforms as well with four-door cab configurations ensuring easy entry and exit.

Differences

Tremor has the edge when it comes to tire size, engine displacement, engine options, available payload, and towing capacity. The Tremor package comes standard with 35-inch all-terrain tires in comparison to the Ram Power Wagon’s 33-inch tires.

The Tremor provides options for gasoline powered 7.3-liter V8, or 6.7-liter diesel V8 engines. Both larger than Ram Power Wagon’s available 6.4-liter offering. 

Ram Power Wagon and Tremor models are both available in 3/4-ton chassis configurations, but the F-Series Super Duty Tremor has the advantage of offering a single-wheel, one-ton model for additional towing and payload capacity.

While both models offer an electronic locking rear differential, the Ram Power Wagon one-ups the Tremor by also providing an electronically locking front differential as well. In addition, Ram Power Wagon is equipped with an electronic anti-roll bar disconnect that allows extra suspension travel. This extra travel could be the difference in having all four tires providing traction or having one or two tires spinning in thin air.
