How to Add More Horses to the Ford Mustang GT’s Stable
The Ford Mustang is perhaps one of the most iconic American cars ever to be produced. And when it comes to “pony cars,” the Mustang GT is one of the most powerful and globally recognized. But what if you want to make the Mustang GT even faster? Then Ford Performance has you covered with a new performance kit.
What’s in the performance kit?
If you currently have a 2018 to 2020 Ford Mustang GT, then you’re in luck, because this kit will have everything you need to achieve a nice bump in horsepower.
The kit includes a performance throttle body, which enhances throttle response; a cold-air intake, for a nice boost in cooler air entering the engine; and a Pro Cal 4 calibration delivery system, which tunes the car to work with the added parts for smoother operation and more power.
Ford Performance noted that the kit includes an 87mm throttle body, which is the same as the one found on the current Mustang Bullitt. However, the kit will include an adapter plate so that it can be installed without hassle.
With this kit, the end-user can expect an additional 19 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 18 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm.
While that may or may not sound like a lot, take into consideration that a large 42-horsepower bump was realized at just 2,000 rpm. So you can expect an increase during high-rpm shifting, but also enjoy a noticeable increase in power when driving normally.
How much does it cost?
The Ford Performance Mustang GT kit costs $1,275, which is a bargain when it comes to gaining horsepower. Especially taking into consideration that you can expect the final output to be somewhere around 470 horsepower and 438 lb-ft of torque.
For reference, the Bullitt Mustang is currently rated at 480 horsepower, so you’re getting the same horsepower figures as the up-level Mustang trim, without having to pay an extra $10,000 for the car.
Is it 50-state legal?
You’ll be happy to know that the Ford Performance Mustang GT kit is 50-state legal, so Californians can actually take part in the fun without having to worry about smog referees.
Does it come with a warranty?
The kit comes with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty when it’s installed by an ASE certified technician or a Ford dealer. The best part is that using this kit will not void your factory warranty, either.
However, Ford recommends that only premium fuel is used after your Mustang’s system is calibrated with the tuning software from the kit.
Add more horses
So, if you’re looking for a nice increase in power for your 2018 to 2020 Ford Mustang GT, this kit is probably the easiest and most cost-effective way to do so.
Why throw together a bunch of different parts from different manufacturers and try to get power out of them, when you can buy this kit and have everything work well from the get-go? As any car enthusiast will tell you: Do it right the first time, or you might end paying a lot more for it in the end.
