With the all-new 2023 Ford Ranger almost here, we expect a range of engine options. At least, we did expect a choice of engines. While it is available in some countries with both the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, that won’t be the case in the U.S. Here, we’ll only see the 2.3-liter with 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. 

Does the Ranger offer hybrid or electric options?

But the big question concerning engine choices is “where are the hybrid and electric versions?” Ford was first with its all-electric F-150 Lightning. So the F-150 has a hybrid option, and Ford only offers the smaller Maverick with a hybrid powertrain. As you can see, Ford is already deep into electric-power alternatives for its pickups. Except for the Ranger.

Both the Ram 1500 and Silverado 1500 full-size pickups have hybrid options. But Ram is out of the loop altogether when it comes to midsize or compact pickups in its truck lineup. However, it does offer a midsize Ram 700 for emerging markets. It is not hybrid-powered, however, but it is a mystery why it’s not sold here.

When can we expect a Ranger hybrid?

Ford is expected to have a hybrid option for the Ranger, but not until 2025 at the earliest, according to Automotive News. At least that beats Chevrolet. It won’t see a hybrid or electric version of its midsize Colorado pickup until 2026. Chevrolet is aiming for 2024 for its full-size electric Silverado. 

So both companies don’t seem to consider a hybrid version a pressing matter. But with the large reservations, not to mention the buzz, over electric full-size pickups, we thought that might speed up electric or PHEV additions. Apparently, that won’t happen.

Ford’s compact Maverick pickup has been available from day one with a hybrid powertrain. Yes, you can get one without it. But hybrid power is standard for the truck. And if you want a 2023 Maverick hybrid, you’re already out of luck. Ford closed order books for it at the beginning of October 2022. So that’s a strong indication of the interest in hybrid-powered pickups. 

Will the Raptor also get a hybrid version?

Ford is also going to offer a hybrid version of its Ranger Raptor, but we won’t venture a guess as to when. The same goes for an all-electric Ranger. All indications are that it is coming, but not until later in the decade. 

The only thing that could change all of these truckmakers’ electric plans is if interest and reservations continue at the pace they’re at now. Demand for hybrid and electric trucks is a lot bigger than expected. And the only way to sell more products is to make what the buyers want. Right now, that’s hybrid and electric vehicles. 

So for the foreseeable future, the Ford Ranger will soldier on with its inline four-cylinder engine as the only power option. When its plans are clearer, we’ll be able to give out more information.
