Like Frankenstein’s monster, Hummer is alive again courtesy of a jolt of electricity. There have been hints that the military truck brand would be revived, but the “how” remained unclear. Some rumors claimed Hummer would be brought back as a high-end off-road truck and SUV brand. Logical, given the brand’s roots, and the growing value of the H1 and its Japanese counterpart, the Toyota Mega Cruiser.

Other reports, though, seemed to indicate GM would bring back Hummer as an electric SUV brand, competing against Rivian and Lincoln with a more off-road focus. Not unlike Bollinger. But now, we can confirm that Hummer is coming back as an electric pickup truck.

What we know about the Hummer electric pickup truck

The Wall Street Journal reported that “people familiar with the matter” claimed GM is planning on resurrecting the Hummer name as a GMC electric pickup truck. There won’t be a separate Hummer brand, as Motor1 and Forbes had suggested previously, just one standalone electric truck.

The new electric Hummer truck comes at a time when GM is investing heavily in electric SUVs and pickups. The planned revisions to the Chevy Silverado’s suspension signal a potential electric version, for example. We also know that GM is upgrading its Hamtramck plant to produce electric versions of the GMC Sierra—which is based on the Silverado—and Cadillac Escalade.

At the moment, no specific details about the GMC Hummer’s planned drivetrain have been revealed. However, Kreisler Electric has made an electric H1 that has a 100-kWh battery, two motors pushing out 483 hp, and a roughly 186-mile range. It wouldn’t be unreasonable for a new Hummer electric truck to reach similar numbers.

We also don’t know the kind of platform the Hummer’s expected to ride on. However, the Hummer H2 previously rode on a version of the Silverado’s frame. Although no word has been given about where the Hummer will be produced, it’s possible GM’s Hamtramck investments were in part to get the plant ready for making the electric truck.

What will the Hummer electric pickup truck compete against?

The WSJ claims the Hummer electric truck will be a “rugged, Jeep-like pickup truck for off-road enthusiasts.” Jeep itself is beginning to electrify and hybridize its lineup: the Wrangler PHEV was just shown at CES, and a Gladiator PHEV is imminent.

Given the plan to market the GMC Hummer as a high-end, small-volume off-road truck, the most likely direct competitors are the Bollinger B2 and Tesla Cybertruck. Bollinger has positioned the B2 as rugged, simplistic electric off-roader from the start. While Tesla hasn’t deliberately focused on off-roading, it will feature off-road amenities like a bed camper.

Also, depending on how the Hummer will be designed, it’s possible it may compete as a Class 2 or 3 truck, like the B2 and Cybertruck. These kinds of trucks can be built differently because they are exempt from certain EPA and safety regulations. GM may take advantage of that like Bollinger and Tesla have. Although, as is the case with Tesla, that may make it difficult for GM to sell the Hummer electric truck outside of the US.

When will it be available?

The Hummer is expected to go on sale in early 2022. This would be after the Bollinger B2 has gone on sale but before the cheapest Tesla Cybertruck. More information might become available next month when GM is planning on rolling out large-scale advertisements.

In the meantime, let’s ponder that we live in a timeline where a production electric Hummer will exist.
