Hurricane Engines Don’t Help the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Save Gas
The new Hurricane engines are supposed to deliver more power and increase the fuel efficiency for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. However, they only provide half of their promise as the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer continues to be a thirsty beast.
Does the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer have a good fuel economy?
No, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer isn’t exactly good on gas. It’s powered by a 6.4-liter V8 HEMI engine with 471 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque, which is an impressive amount of power. However, the HEMI engines could be replaced by more fuel-efficient options soon.
With the HEMI engine and front-wheel drive, the Grand Wagoneer gets an EPA-estimated 13 mpg in the city and up to 19 mpg on the highway.
If you equip the Grand Wagoneer with four-wheel drive, then the EPA-estimated figures drop to 13 mpg in the city and up to 18 mpg on the highway.
Rivals like the Chevy Tahoe do a bit better on fuel, with an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.
Do Hurricane engines improve the Jeep Grand Wagoneer’s fuel efficiency?
The new Hurricane engines do help the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer save a little fuel, but not much. Your wallet will be slightly thankful.
According to Mopar Insiders, with the Hurricane 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 High Output (H.O) engine, the Grand Wagoneer gets an EPA-estimated 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.
Adding 4×4 reduces these figures to about an EPA-estimated 14 mpg in the city and up to 21 mpg on the highway. So, this more powerful and more efficient engine only improves the fuel economy by about one or two miles per gallon.
But at least the Hurricane inline-six engines do crank out more power. The Standard Output (S.O) variant provides over 400 hp and more than 450 lb-ft of torque.
The H.O. engine delivers 510 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, which is an impressive amount of power compared to the Grand Wagoneer’s 6.4-liter V8 HEMI.
How much can the Grand Wagoneer tow?
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer can tow up to 9,850 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,360 lbs. The new Hurricane engines may increase these figures. However, the Grand Wagoneer already features best-in-class towing.
Stellantis designed the Hurricane engines with the ability to go hybrid. So, It’s possible that the Grand Wagoneer could become more fuel-efficient as it gains more towing power.
Also, we have our eye on the upcoming Jeep Grand Wagoneer L, which is an even larger model with a longer wheelbase. It could tow and carry more than the regular Grand Wagoneer models.
The Grand Wagoneer features up to 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and up to 94.2 cubes total. We should learn how much more cargo space the Grand Wagoneer L will offer soon.
You can expect the Grand Wagoneer to be available with the new Hurricane engines by the end of the summer. The Grand Wagoneer L is expected to arrive at dealerships around the same time.
