1 hybrid Toyota truck is embarrassing Prius models
When you think about hybrid vehicles you probably think about cars and SUVs. But one hybrid Toyota truck is changing the game by outselling popular hybrid SUVs. It’s beating multiple Toyota Prius models.
This hybrid Toyota truck is outselling Prius models
The hybrid Toyota truck with plenty of sales to brag about is the Toyota Tundra. It is available with the hybrid i-Force MAX powertrain.
During the first nine months of 2024, the Tundra Hybrid has sold 33,679 models. This is a 58.5% sales increase compared to the same time period last year.
Overall, the 117,523 Tundra trucks have been sold so far in 2024. The hybrid variants account for 28.6% of the total sales.
During the first nine months of 2024, the Toyota Prius and Prius Prime have sold 28,642 models combined. The Prius lineup celebrates a 2.7% year-over-year increase.
However, the big hybrid Toyota truck is currently outselling the Prius lineup by roughly 5.037 units. There’s still time for the Prius to catch up.
The Toyota Tundra Hybrid pairs a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 engine with an electric motor to generate 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 24 mpg on the highway. During my week with one, I never got above 18 mpg.
With the 2024 Toyota Prius, you get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce 194 hp. It gets an EPA-estimated 49 mpg in the city and up to 50 mph on the highway. I was getting about 52 mpg during my week with one.
Also, let’s talk about price. The 2024 Tundra Hybrid has an MSRP of $57,625 and the 2024 Prius starts at $27,950. That’s a $29,75 difference before destination fees and dealership markups come into play.
Understandably, the Prius has a reputation for being lame. The older models were slow and awkward-looking. But now they’re sleek, modern, attractive, and athletic.
