The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is reportedly adding a larger battery pack. Just a year after its initial release, it’ll come to the United States this fall with the new battery. Currently, all Ioniq 5 models have 30 2.4 kW battery modules. A jump in the number of modules will increase the overall battery capacity. CarScoops claims that’s exactly what is going to happen.

The 30 modules of 2.4 kW will increase to “no less than 32” according to CarScoops. This change will increase the battery capacity from 72.6 kWh to 77.4 kWh. The Kia EV6 is launching on the same platform as the Ioniq 5 with a 77.4 kWh battery pack, so this change makes total sense. This change will increase the driving range of the Ioniq 5 by a pretty substantial amount.

The current battery range in the Korean market is 423 km or 268 miles. This larger battery pack will boost the Ioniq 5 up to between 480 and 490 km or 298-304.5 miles. The model doesn’t come to the U.S. market until late in 2021, but other markets had much smaller battery packs in their version. It was reported previously that the U.S. market would get the Ioniq 5 with a 77.4 kWh battery pack.

The U.S. version of the Ioniq 5 will use a single rear-mounted motor with 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This model is expected to have a range of up to 300 miles. There will also be a dual-motor variant that comes with all-wheel drive. The dual-motor will produce 320 horsepower combined, and 446 lb-ft of torque.

There will be multiple trim levels for the dual-motor model, which will have different ranges. The range will vary from between 244 miles to 269 miles depending on the trim, according to Hyundai. The Ioniq 5 will have plenty of options when it comes to the U.S. market, and the bigger battery pack is a welcomed addition.

Is anything else changing?

A few different over-the-air updates are also coming to this Hyundai model. These updates will bring much-needed upgrading to the infotainment and driver-assistance systems. Another update could also enable owners to feed energy back into the electrical grid using V2G (Vehicle to Grid) technology.

Though other specifics have not been shared, the over-the-air updates being this frequent are a great sign. When the Ioniq 5 comes to the U.S., Hyundai will have already learned a lot from other markets. Whatever issues there are, from a laggy touchscreen to something much worse, can be updated. Hopefully, the U.S. will be getting the best version of the Ioniq 5.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an electric SUV that looks futuristic and stylish. The upgraded, bigger battery pack means owners will be able to drive further and longer on a single charge. The Ioniq 5 comes to the U.S. sometime this fall and will be upgraded from other markets. If the battery pack grows any larger, it’ll be competing with the 360-mile range Tesla Model X before we know it.
