Midsize SUVs are some of the most popular vehicles in America, edging out the sedan as the most-seen vehicles on American roads. If you’re on a budget, Hyundai is the only brand offering two for under $20,000.

Both of these vehicles, the 2020 Hyundai Kona and the 2020 Hyundai Venue, offer versatility, lots of technology, and best of all a great price. Is there a catch, or are these two budget-friendly SUVs a great buy?

The 2020  Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona is a compact SUV that loves adventure, at an affordable price tag. It has five different trims to choose from, all providing plenty of features and safety. It’s a rugged vehicle with curved, sophisticated lines, with available all-wheel drive and traction control to keep you confident in any weather.

The 2020 Hyundai Kona is the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year in 2019, and got a 2020 NHTSA 5-Star Overall Safety Rating, and was a IIHS Top Safety Pick. Inside, there’s a standard heads-up display that projects your speed, cruise control, navigation, and safety information right onto the windshield.

High-tech safety abounds with Hyundai Safety Sense in every Kona. This includes a full range of driver assistance features such as blind spot warning and pedestrian detection.

There’s a 7-inch touch screen navigation system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth connectivity. Available heated front seats, proximity key with push-button start, and roof side rails.

The 2020 Hyundai Venue

With impressive gas mileage of up to 35 miles per gallon highway and a price tag of $17,350,  the 2020 Hyundai Venue is very economical. Hyundai calls it an Urban Compact SUV because it’s small and agile, perfect for driving around in the city.

It has an attractive stance with a bold face and rear hatch that opens wide for your gear. It’s got loads of tech for the price, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and an 8-inch navigation system.

The tech in the Venue extends to the safety systems all the latest driver assistance gadgets like blind spot collision warning, forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning, and rear cross-traffic collision warning.

Which Hyundai SUV has the edge?

In reality, both these SUVs from Hyundai are a great deal. Although the Venue has better gas mileage and a little more room, both of these vehicles meet the needs of today’s families quite well. Including their low price tags, all new 2020 Hyundai vehicles get complimentary maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles.

The Kona sets itself apart in this category with available all-wheel drive, while most SUVs in this category, including the Venue, are only available in front-wheel drive.

The most significant difference between the two vehicles is the size. The Venue has a 3.2-inch shorter wheelbase than the Kona, and overall it is 5.1 inches shorter. It is a tiny bit taller and 1.2 inches narrower than the Kona as well.

This makes it one of the smallest SUVs out there, even smaller than the Chevy Trax and the Nissan Kicks. There isn’t as big of a difference in cargo space as you might expect though, with Kona having 18.7 cubic feet of cargo space and Venue having 19.2 cubic cargo space.

When it comes down to it, there doesn’t really seem to be any drawbacks to getting such a good deal on these two midsize SUVs. Both the Hyundai Kona and Venue stand out among their peers for their economy, high tech interior features, and all the latest safety.
