Hyundai rocked the car world when the South Korean Marque launched one of the coolest concept cars we have ever seen, the Hyundai N Vision 74. This concept broke the idea that Hyundai couldn’t make something for enthusiasts. So when rumors surfaced about Hyundai wanting to make a mid-engined supercar, the idea wasn’t completely absurd. But is Hyundai really going to do it? Would anyone buy it? Again, the N Vision 74 is one of the coolest cars we’ve ever seen, and it has the “H” badge. 

Is Hyundai making a supercar?

According to The Drive, in September 2022, Hyundai’s president (and former Hyundai N boss) Albert Biermann told Top Gear that they were working on a mid-engined supercar but ultimately decided to table the project. Supercars are simply not Hyundai’s market. 

But then, at the Chicago Auto show, Hyundai design director Hak Soo Ha told Car Scoops that a Hyundai supercar could still happen. “There’s been such efforts going on,” Hak Soo Ha told CS. “But at what point we make it economically viable, or do we do product planning, or on what donor platform we bring it to market, what powertrain, that’s all kind of up in the air.” 

What is the most expensive Hyundai? 

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the most expensive model Hyundai currently has. Hyundai’s electric SUV can run north or $58,000 before options. This is a lot of money. However, Biermann cites price as one of the biggest issues with making a Hyundai supercar. He says the idea would be to make a carbon tub chassis and stick the engine in the middle, which could be hydrogen-powered. This car would likely be at least $150,000, the president says. 

Why would Hyundai make a supercar? 

It might sound silly, but if you think about it, Honda did this very thing with the Honda NSX. Granted, Honda had a bit of a sportier reputation by the time the Honda NSX hit. Hyundai has models like the Veloster N, but the brand hasn’t earned the same sports car cred as Honda had by the late ’80s. 

Honestly, there isn’t much hope of a Hyundai supercar. But the door isn’t closed yet; it’s still possible. This would feel like an April Fools Joke if it weren’t for the N Vision 74. That concept car was just well designed that it makes the entire thing feel possible. Also, it almost feels like it would be a shame not to put that car into production, even if for a short time, in limited numbers.

The Drive brings up a good point: while many of us might not buy a $150,000 Hyundai, no matter how good it is, they might buy a $150,000 Genesis. The luxury arm of the Hyundai Kia conglomerate, Genesis, has garnered a strong reputation among other luxury sedans and SUVs. Genesis could be the badge that sells a $150,000 Hyundai supercar. 

The Drive also mentions that, like the R8 legitimized Audi as a proper performance brand, maybe a Genesis “N Vision” could legitimize Hyundai/Kia in the same way. 

The idea is really interesting and, if nothing else, an interesting marketing idea. If nothing else, it’s a legitimate pathway for the N Vision 74, or something like it, to actually get made.
