They’ve always been practical, but minivans have also gotten seriously swanky in the last few years. And we’re not just talking about Kanye West’s six-figure Maybach one. However, urbanites aren’t the only ones who can experience the new level of luxury and style. Much like their cargo van cousins, minivans are also great bases for camper van builds. And more than a few American campers will likely be looking in envy at the new Hyundai Staria Lounge Camper.

The Hyundai Staria Lounge Camper lets the stylish minivan experience #vanlife

Do you want to ferry up to 11 people in a minivan that looks like something from Tron: Legacy? Well, good news for those living overseas, because the 2022 Hyundai Staria can do that. But it can also serve as a Nappa-leather-lined four-person private jet for the road, or as a 15-passenger school bus. And now, there’s a camper van version, the Hyundai Staria Lounge Camper.

Now, several aftermarket companies have already made Staria camper van conversions. However, unlike those vans, the Lounge Camper is an official factory trim. Basically, it’s Hyundai’s answer to the Mercedes Metris Getaway. But while Mercedes’ factory camper van starts at roughly $61K, the Hyundai one starts at roughly $40.6K. And even the version with all the bells and whistles starts at roughly $56,300.

Speaking of features, the Hyundai Staria Lounge Camper is available as a four- and an 11-seater. Both versions come standard with FWD and a 175-hp 2.2-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder, though AWD is available. Also, Car and Driver claims a 3.5-liter V6 will be available in the future. Plus, because they’re based on the Staria Premier, these vans also come standard with things like leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, LED exterior and interior lighting, and a 10.25” touchscreen.

And then there are the camper van upgrades.

It’s not a full RV, but the Hyundai Staria Lounge Camper does bring some of the comforts of home

No camper van is complete without sleeping space, and the 2022 Hyundai Staria Lounge Camper has two of them. Each comes standard with a fold-down two-person air mattress and an electrically-operated pop-up roof tent. The tent has its own mattress and LED lamp, too. And when you inevitably want to bring in some fresh air, the Staria Lounge Camper has an optional built-in awning with LED lights.

If you want more camping goodies, though, you’ll need the four-person Hyundai Staria Lounge Camper, because the 11-passenger one’s seats take up space. Instead of those seats, the four-person van gets interior shelving and a countertop with a built-in sink, refrigerator, and 12.1” vehicle monitoring/controlling touchscreen. An exterior power supply fuels the fridge, while the sink is attached to 18.5-gallon fresh water and 10.6-gallon wastewater tanks. Also, it has infinity yacht flooring.

Unfortunately, neither Hyundai camper van model offers a toilet. But the four-seater Staria does have two folding tables—one inside, one outside—and a built-in shower head hookup. Both Staria models have rear-mounted power sockets, though. And if you want more luxuries, Hyundai offers things like an Airtronic heater, onboard batteries, mosquito netting, and upgraded chargers.

Will Hyundai offer something similar in the U.S.?

Unfortunately, like the standard Hyundai Staria, the Lounge Camper isn’t coming to the US. So, for now, the Mercedes Metris is really the only automaker-factory-direct camper van in the U.S. But with the Volkswagen ID. Buzz finally confirmed for release here, that might change in a few years.

However, Hyundai does sell a minivan here, the Kia Carnival. Admittedly, the Carnival doesn’t have a cargo version like the Metris or the Staria. As such, converting it into a camper van would be trickier. But as noted earlier, minivan campers exist. Perhaps if there’s enough interest, Kia might consider bringing some of the Staria’s camping-friendly features over.

But for now, the Staria is just giving #vanlife aficionados a new perspective on the ‘the grass is greener’ saying.
