The ID.4 GTX Gives the Volkswagen Electric SUV an Extra Spark
The first Volkswagen electric SUV (well, crossover), the 2021 ID.4, is finally arriving on US shores. And it’s just the first of several ID EVs to follow. But there’s still room for the ID.4 to grow before its sub-brand-mates arrive. This is why, for those interested in performance, Volkswagen has revealed the ID.4 GTX.
The Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV now has a higher-performance GTX trim
As of this writing, every US-market 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 has the same powertrain. The electric SUV has a rear-mounted electric motor rated at 201 hp and 229 lb-ft linked to an 82-kWh battery pack, Forbes reports. However, the pack’s usable capacity is only 77 kWh, Car and Driver reports. Still, all this is enough to let the RWD ID.4 go 0-60 mph in 7.6 seconds, Car and Driver reports.
But if that’s not quite fast enough for you, Volkswagen has a solution: the ID.4 GTX. If you’re a fan of the GTI, the GTX’s name and looks may have a familiar ring, Roadshow reports. And that’s intentional on VW’s part. However, the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is more than an appearance package for the electric SUV.
In addition to a red-trimmed interior with a new gauge cluster and blue panels, extra badges, and some new body panels, the GTX also gets an extra motor, Car and Driver reports. So, not only does it have AWD, but it also has 295 hp. As a result, VW claims the ID.4 GTX goes 0-60 mph 2.3 seconds faster than the RWD model, Motor1 reports.
The ID.4 GTX doesn’t have a larger battery than the standard version. However, it does offer an optional Sport Pack, which provides a lower ride height and an upgraded steering rack, Evo reports. Adaptive dampers will also be an option, Motor1 reports.
Will the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX come to the US?
Unfortunately, as of this writing, it appears Volkswagen isn’t bringing the ID.4 GTX to the US, MotorTrend reports. However, that doesn’t mean some of the GTX’s features won’t come here.
For one thing, we are getting a dual-motor AWD version of the ID.4, fittingly called ‘ID.4 AWD,’ Autoweek reports. And the US version might be slightly more powerful, too. Also, per Autoweek, the AWD version of the ID.4 will have “slightly stiffer suspension.” So, while we might not get the ID.4 GTX, we are getting parts of it.
That being said, our version won’t have the GTX’s trim-specific interior and exterior features, MT reports. However, MT points out that Volkswagen could offer them as part of an R-Line package. Such a package is already available on several US-market VW models.
How much will it cost?
As of this writing, we don’t know how much the ID.4 AWD will cost, or when it arrives in dealers. But we do know the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX hits European dealers in summer 2021, Motor1 reports.
It starts at the equivalent of $61,100 before subsidies. Considering the US-market ID.4 starts at just under $40K, the AWD model will likely cost around $45,000-$50,000.
