Recalls happen. No car manufacturer can really avoid it, but because these things are typically the result of a manufacturing practice or faulty materials, we tend to see them happen in wide swaths. What is a little more noteworthy is when we see a recall for the same reason happen multiple times to the same model. Some cars like the 2020 Ford Explorer indeed have embarrassing amounts of recalls, but it isn’t super common. Although, now the Infiniti FX35 and FX45 are getting their third airbag recall. 

The Infiniti FX35 and FX45 have an airbag recall, again 

According to Consumer Reports, Infiniti is about to recall some 2006 through 2008 FX35 and FX45 SUVs for another airbag issue. These models already had their passenger-side airbags replaced in an earlier recall. Apparently, the replacement airbags have the potential to tear when deployed, which could cause serious injury. Needless to say, they have to be replaced again. 

Consumer Reports notes that this is not the first or even second time these Infinitis have needed their airbags replaced. In 2016, the FX35 and FX45 had to have the airbags replaced due to faulty Takata airbag inflators. The inflators not only didn’t do what they were supposed to, which can save lives in the event of a crash, but they also exploded, sending metal shrapnel around the car once deployed. 

Once Infiniti learned about this issue, they replaced the defective inflators, but there was a parts shortage. The plan then changed to use temporary inflators until more parts came in. Once the proper inflators came in, Infiniti had to replace the replacements, and now those replacements need replacing. (I said “replacement” too many times.)

Infiniti is at it again

Infiniti quality control has noticed that the permanent replacements for the first airbags now have a design flaw that puts them at risk of rupturing upon inflation. CR says that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documentation shows the automaker said it is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to this latest recall. So, let’s get down to brass tax on precisely which models are affected and what you can do about it. 

What happens now? 

The models affected by this newest recall are the 2006-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45. This is basically a continuation of the previous airbag recalls, which is why these older models are still getting recalls. 

Apparently, the problem with the last replacement airbags was how the bags were folded at the factory. Something about the folding makes them at risk of tearing during deployment. This is dangerous for multiple reasons. One being the airbag not being able to do its normal job of cushioning drivers and passengers. Two, the shredded airbag can supposedly be harmful in and of itself. 

Infiniti is offering to replace the faulty airbags, again, for free. Starting April 18, 2021, owners of affected Infiniti FX35 and FX45 models can come to an Infiniti dealership and have the airbags replaced.
