The Internet Is Mocking the New BMW M5 For Being Heavier Than a Truck
M cars had a formula. Sneaky, sleeper styling takes on two and four-door vehicles with massive power, bitey brakes, and enough lightness to make it all move effortlessly. However, some of the latest, horsepower-hungry, all-wheel drive (AWD) M cars have exchanged low weight for blistering performance and sure-footed grip. That’s what the all-new 2025 BMW M5 and its massive curb weight. In fact, the portly BMW sedan is catching flak from the internet for its considerable heft.
At 5,390 lbs, the new 2025 BMW M5 weighs over 1,000 lbs more than its predecessor and more than some pickup trucks
The upcoming 2025 BMW M5 will tip the scales at around 5,390 lbs. Let that set in. It’s a four-door luxury performance sedan with the curb weight of some full-size pickup trucks. Moreover, it’s an incredible 1,045 lbs heavier than the 2023 model.
2025 BMW M5 | 5,390 lbs |
2023 BMW M5 | 4,345 lbs |
2024 Tesla Model X Plaid | 5,248 lbs |
2024 Lucid Air Sapphire | 5,336 lbs |
2024 RAM 1500 | 4,765 lbs |
2024 Ford F-150 Supercrew | 4,941 lbs |
In fact, the M5’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is most of that weight surplus. The system weighs nearly 900 lbs, pushing the M5’s overall weight well over the 5,000-lb threshold. Consequently, the internet created memes comparing the M5 to other heavy objects, like trucks, trees, and even spacecraft. Fortunately, I’ve yet to see a “your mom” in there. Notice I said yet.
Hilariously, one comparison meme calls out the M5 for being heavier than the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) European Remote Sensing satellite, ERS-2. In the meme, the author states that the ERS-2 weighs around 5,057 lbs. However, NASA says the laser range-finding satellite weighs closer to 2,516 kg, or 5,546 lbs.
So, while that meme wasn’t exactly accurate, it illustrates just how heavy the hybridized BMW M5 actually is. It’s not far off from the weight of a purpose-developed satellite. So, can the M5 deliver results considering its monstrous weight?
Well, in short, yes. We expect the M5 to hit 60 mph in under three seconds on its way to a sub-11 second quarter mile. We’re talking C8 Corvette speed in a seriously heavy sports sedan. Moreover, we anticipate the M5 will wrestle its considerable heft into submission around corners. However, it will have a tough time being as athletic as its predecessor.
