Pros and cons of each

The Nissan Rogue’s continuously variable transmission paired with a 170-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes it feel weak compared to other SUVs in its class. Alternatively, the Mazda CX-5 lacks an engine upgrade. Other compact crossovers such as the Chevrolet Equinox and the Kia Sportage have strong turbocharged engines, and competitors such as the Honda CR-V have a bit more interior room and better fuel economy.

However, the Rogue offers user-friendly tech options and features, and it has plenty of cargo space. The CX-5 has upscale interior materials paired with standard tech and convenience features, all of which give the sense of a vehicle that should be more expensive than it is.

Which used compact SUV is the right fit for you?

For the money, we would go with the 2018 Mazda CX-5 for the five-star safety, especially if you have a family. Think extra horsepower and torque won’t feel as sluggish in the CX-5. If that’s not enough to convince you, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 was one of Edmunds‘ Best Family SUVs and Best Small SUVs for 2018.

No matter which model you choose, remember that there are several factors that play into making a purchase decision on a used car. A Carfax report is always a good idea as well as getting an inspection from a trusted mechanic.
