Chevrolet has a reputation for producing reliable and practical vehicles that offer good value, but their designs may not always stand out as much as some other automakers’ models. Take, for example, the Traverse.

Since its second generation was released in 2018, it has done little to impress critics. In fact, Edmunds has gone so far as to suggest other models that are similar but offer better features and more value for the money. Let’s take a closer look at the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse.

Edmunds’s review of the 2023 Chevy Traverse

Edmunds was unimpressed when the current-generation Chevrolet Traverse debuted in 2018. They used words like “decidedly average” and “awkward” to describe it. Consumers are now looking to the future, and the old ways of simply making a reliable and safe car simply won’t do. Their demands are such that they also want style and luxury at an affordable price.

Edmunds says that the Traverse suffers from poor rear visibility and an interior that is filled with too much hard plastic, making it look and feel cheap when compared to its rivals that offer entry-level luxury. Additionally, other vehicles provide more features and higher-quality interiors for less.

Consumers now want to be wowed when they are looking to purchase a new vehicle. They are looking for creature comforts that were once reserved for only the most luxurious cars and well-appointed interior touches such as large infotainment screens and the latest technology.

The 2023 Chevy Traverse is too average

When it comes to the Traverse, Edmunds said, “The 2023 Chevrolet Traverse has its strengths, including a spacious cabin and a powerful V6, but it’s outpaced by a number of strong rival midsize three-row SUVs.” The fact is that it is too average to be competitive. 

Since its debut, it has done little to set itself apart from the competition. First introduced in 2009, the second generation debuted in 2018. Since then, it has done little to add any more value. It has the basic features that are available in almost every model in its class, and nothing more. 

Critics recommend looking elsewhere

Edmunds recommends looking at the 2023 Kia Telluride as an alternative to the Traverse. Even though the Traverse may have similar passenger and cargo space, the Telluride is more enjoyable to drive, comes with more features making it a better value, and it has one of the best warranties in the automotive industry.

Another model Edmunds recommends is the Hyundai Palisade. It has a slightly more upscale feel with a very well-appointed interior as well as more features that set it apart from the Traverse. As with the Telluride, it’s simply more than average. 

Perhaps Chevrolet has been neglecting the Traverse in favor of its expansion into the EV space. However, keeping itself competitive requires innovation and progress with all of its offerings.

Maybe nicer materials on the interior and some subtle exterior changes could bring back the wow factor for the Traverse. But for now, Edmunds advises seeking out other models that offer a better value for your money.

That being said, ultimately, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The style and design preferences of a vehicle are subjective, and what may be plain to one person may be stylish and sophisticated to another.
