Is the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Too Expensive?
One of the best-value small SUVs available today is the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek. However, the top model in the lineup is a hybrid, which, as you might expect, uses a hybrid powertrain. Is paying extra for the hybrid variant worth it? We’ll take a look at the features, equipment, powertrain, and more. Is the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid too expensive?
2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid: Price
According to Edmunds, the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid costs $38,070. This price is nearly $8,000 more than the second-most expensive trim, the Limited model. What makes the hybrid variant worth so much more cash? It seems even more expensive if we compare the Hybrid to other trims in the lineup. For example, the bottom-tier Base model is just $24,870 and is surprisingly well-equipped for the price.
2023 Subaru Crosstrek trim | Price |
Base | $24,870 |
Premium | $26,020 |
Premium Special Edition | $27,970 |
Sport | $29,220 |
Limited | $30,720 |
Hybrid | $38,070 |
How does the Hybrid powertrain compare?
The first thing every customer will ask about the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is the hybrid powertrain. For bottom-tier trims, the Crosstrek uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an output of 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. However, higher trims like the Sport and Limited use a more potent 2.5-liter four-cylinder. This unit produces a respectable 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft.
Alternatively, the range-topping Hybrid model actually uses a plug-in hybrid system. Moreover, it combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with hybrid components that owners can recharge at home or a public charging station. Combined, the output for the hybrid powertrain is 148 hp. Additionally, the Crosstrek can drive for about 17 miles on all-electric power. Using a standard 110-volt outlet, charging takes about five hours; however, a Level 2 charging station will fully charge the small SUV in about two hours.
Does the Crosstrek Hybrid have more features?
Although the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is well-equipped, it doesn’t have many unique features. However, the most costly model gets blue contrast stitching in the cabin, which isn’t offered on any other trim in the lineup. Besides that, the Hybrid model uses the same equipment as the Crosstrek Limited. Exclusive items include 18-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, LED foglights, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, and rear automatic braking.
The Limited and Hybrid models also get an exclusive option package. It contains an eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, an integrated navigation system, and a sunroof. However, the Hybrid model also gains an ever-valuable heated steering wheel with its optional package. As a result, the package is the only way to get the Hybrid model to be more well-equipped than the Crosstrek Limited. Other than that, the only advantage is the powertrain.
Is a Crosstrek Hybrid too expensive?
In conclusion, we believe most small SUV owners will find plenty of value in the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. Whether or not it’s too expensive is up to you, but you’re mostly paying for the plug-in hybrid system. Besides the unique powertrain, this version of the Crosstrek is nearly identical to the Limited model of the small SUV, which costs $8,000 less. To us, that sounds like a lot for an alternative powertrain to improve fuel economy. If that doesn’t interest you, the Sport and Limited models provide similar value for a lower price.
