Is a Dodge Challenger a Good Daily Driver?
Who doesn’t want a cool Mopar like a Dodge Challenger or Charger to drive every day? Well, some of you might not, but most of you reading this are thinking about it. Still, is daily driving a Dodge Challenger a practical move? Or should you find yourself something else like a Ford Mustang?
Is a Dodge Challenger good for daily use?
The Dodge Challenger is the biggest car in the muscle car coupe segment. While that seems like it might be a detriment, it is helpful in many cases, like cargo volume. Also, Consumer Reports says that the 2022 Challenger is somewhat reliable. Finally, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) reports that a V8-powered Dodge Challenger has repair costs of nearly $1,200 cheaper than a comparable V8 Chevrolet Camaro over five years.
Is a Challenger practical?
The Dodge Challenger is heavier, wider, and longer than rival cars Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. As a result, the Challenger has the largest trunk in the muscle car coupe segment. Furthermore, the Challenger has a usable back seat. That’s good news for shoppers who don’t want the tight back seat of the Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Camaro.
The Challenger also has big, comfortable front seats in cloth or leather, with available heating and ventilation. Although the LX platform car is a bit tired at this point, Dodge uses features like its top-notch infotainment system to keep the vehicle relevant. You’ll want to play with the performance pages with higher-performance models like the SRT Hellcat.
Are Challengers good on gas?
Unfortunately, Dodge Challengers trail the segment in fuel economy. At the bottom of the trim range, the Pentastar V6-powered SXT gets 19 mpg in the city and 30 mpg at highway speeds. A comparable Ford Mustang EcoBoost clears 21 mpg in the city but misses the Challenger’s highway mpg by one. However, a V8-powered Dodge Challenger is thirstier.
Consumer Reports says the R/T with its 5.7L V8 demands 14 mpg city and 23 mpg at highway speeds. A comparable Chevrolet Camaro SS will net 16 mpg city and 24 mpg at highway speeds. Unfortunately, the news worsens with the stratospherically powerful SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody trim. The Redeye Widebody gets just 13 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.
Should you drive a Dodge Challenger every day?
The Dodge Challenger offers the practicality of a usable backseat, decent trunk, and manageable repair costs. Furthermore, KBB reports that the Challenger depreciates less than many comparable performance cars. A Dodge Challenger is a solid daily driver if you can live with the fuel economy and size.
Better yet, if you want volcanic V8 power in your daily driver, the Dodge coupe can scratch that itch. Some fans drive SRT cars on a daily basis, even with 797 and 807 horsepower on tap. If you want to drive your Mopar every day, you should. Just respect the horsepower and try not to slide it into a lamppost.
