Is Dodge Discontinuing the Durango?
Over the last few years, there has been talk about the Dodge Durango’s longevity in the market. Whether or not Dodge will kill the Durango is a question lots of people have been asking. Even more so after word that the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer may get a revival as Jeep’s new 3-row SUVs. Is Dodge still discontinuing the Durango?
Fiat Chrysler Automotive may change their plans as nothing is ever certain –– especially after the recent production disruption and economic upset we’ve seen in 2020. There have been reports of sightings of an updated Dodge Durango for 2021. In the current uncertain times, we may see a later release date in 2022. Still, it looks like the Dodge Durango may see a few more years yet as one of FCA’s 3-row SUVs.
An all-new Dodge Durango
Based on the reports of some spy shots, it looks like Dodge will rework the front end at least one more time. The redesigned front fascia are likely going to look more aggressive with bold front vents. Also, integrated fog lights and LED headlights will be implemented on the new Dodge Durango. It’s sure to uphold that Dodge look, reminiscent of the muscle car soul.
New Durango powertrain options
According to this report, the new 3-row SUV will see FCA’s hybrid technology. They’ve introduced a mild hybrid system. In the place of the alternator, there is a 48-volt generator.
This gives the powertrain a little extra torque for more power. Plus, extra pounds on the towing capacity which was already at the top of its class. So while it may be mild, it’s anything but tame. The hybrid system also aids the stop-start system, making the driving experience that much smoother.
Will the 2021 Dodge Durango have a Hellcat?
The news on Mopar Insiders tells us about the updates the Dodge Durango will see in terms of a performance-focused engine upgrade. A 707 horsepower Hellcat could be added to the engine options for the Dodge 3-row SUV in the next year or so. But “soon” is the only thing we’ve heard up to now as far as an official release date goes.
“Dodge also will be bringing additional performance to the Durango lineup. Our sources are now telling us that Dodge is going forward with plans of producing a HELLCAT-powered model. We are hearing we should start seeing prototypes testing very soon. Expect the same running gear that underpins the all-wheel-drive 707 horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.”

Is the Dodge Journey going to be discontinued?
All this talk about discontinuation in order to make room for other SUVs in the FCA lineup has us wondering about the Dodge Journey, as well. What will its fate be and what will become of this smaller available 3-row SUV? Apparently, it will not be discontinued. It’s hanging around a little while longer sporting a few minor updates, according to Jeep Trend.
Dodge 3-row SUVs
With the market for SUVs still projected to steam forward, it makes sense that Dodge is keeping its 3-row SUVs. Neither the Dodge Durango nor the Dodge Journey will be discontinued this year, or the next as of today. It will definitely be interesting to see how the release of the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer affect the sales of other 3-row SUVs in the FCA lineup.
