Is Honda Bringing Back the Civic Hybrid for 2022?
Will there be a 2022 Honda Civic Hybrid? If you’re a European consumer, there will be. Honda announced recently that they’ll be releasing a hybrid version of the Civic for European markets only—for now. It’s called the Civic e:HEV, and it rounds out Honda’s electrified car lineup internationally.
The Civic e:HEV will be arriving in Europe in fall of 2022
According to reports, the Honda Civic Hybrid (the e:HEV) will be released in the fall, landing in Europe in late 2022. At first, the new model will only be available in hatchback form. It will look and feel a lot like the classic Civic. Honda isn’t reinventing the wheel to put out a new Civic Hybrid when the eleventh generation just launched recently.
The history of the Civic Hybrid sedan and hatchback
The history of the Honda Civic Hybrid isn’t too long, but it launched during a tough time for hybrids. The first model arrived in 2003 to offer a larger, more passenger-friendly version of the Honda Insight, which, at the time, was a tiny two-door hybrid. The hybrid lasted through three generations of the Civic (2003-2005, 2006-2011, and 2012-2015) until the Civic Hybrid was discontinued in 2015.
Why did Honda discontinue the Civic Hybrid?
There were likely a handful of reasons that all added up to cause the discontinuation of Honda’s compact Civic Hybrid. Low gas prices weren’t spurring sales of hybrid cars the way that today’s high prices are. The Civic Hybrid consistently got low sales numbers, and the company likely couldn’t justify pushing out a new model during the development of the 10th-generation Civic in 2016. With the market in its current state, and rising gas prices showing no signs of slowing down, we can guess that the new Civic Hybrid will do better today.
2022 Honda Civic e:HEV Hybrid Hatchback quick specs and features
The 2022 Honda Civic e:HEV hybrid will come standard with a 2.0-liter hybrid four-cylinder engine and a dual-motor electric CVT system. The all-new Civic Hybrid will be good for 181 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque with 212 combined system horsepower. Current estimates indicate that this model will likely see up to 47 mpg.
Will the 2022 Civic e:HEV make it over to the U.S.? More than likely, we’ll see a 2023 Honda Civic Hybrid, should Honda choose to bring the hybrid Civic over the pond. Get a full look at the Honda Civic e:HEV via Autotrader UK:
Will the U.S. see a new 11th-gen Civic Hybrid?
At the time of writing, according to Autoblog, Honda representatives hadn’t yet commented on whether the company will bring the Civic e:HEV to the U.S.
In April, Honda released a statement that the Civic Hybrid would live again. We’re still waiting on specific details, but we do know that Civic, Accord, and CR-V hybrid cars are in the plans for the Honda brand.
Does this spell doom for the Honda Insight?
Sales of Honda Insight models have been sluggish the last few years. It was the worst-selling Honda car that’s not actively on the chopping block. The Insight offers only a combined 151 horsepower, is slightly smaller than the Honda Civic overall, and has fewer trim levels and options.
Honda has since confirmed that the Insight will be discontinued.
