Is It a Good Time To Buy a 2020 Acura TLX?
With the much-anticipated 2021 Acura TLX coming to dealerships soon, you might be wondering if it’s a good time to make a move on the 2020 models. Sure, the new TLX will have an updated look inside and out, new tech, and a couple of new engines, but the 2020 Acura TLX is still a great luxury sedan. Especially considering there are a lot of a great financing and lease deals on it. But is it really a good idea to buy the older model now?
The Acura TLX is a combination of sportiness and luxury
The current generation of the Acura TLX debuted for the 2015 model year. Back then, the brand was realigning its lineup and basically mashed up the TSX, a sporty compact sedan, with the TL, which was a larger sedan. As such, they came up with “TLX,” which was fitting because it has the size of the TL and the sporty attitude of the TSX.
Although, the TLX proved to be just a little better than the two cars that it was spawned from as it carried a much sleeker sense of style, complete with smoother body lines, a more elegant interior devoid of the plethora of dash buttons that the TL had, as well as a pair of newer engines. Under the hood was a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine that produced 201 horsepower or an optional 3.5-liter V6 engine that pushed out 290 horsepower. Unlike the two cars that it originated from, however, the TLX was not available with a manual transmission as it was only offered with either an 8-speed or 9-speed automatic transmission.
The current Acura TLX performs well enough
The Acura TLX was always meant to a luxurious performer and it does well in splitting the difference between those two attributes, as long as you’re not counting the actual statistics. In their initial review of 2015 TLX, the folks at Car and Driver noted that the V6-powered TLX was able to get to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, although the BMW 3 Series at the time could get there a full second quicker. As you can imagine, the 2.4-liter engine made the car slower, clocking in a 0-60 time of 7.4 seconds, according to Edmunds.
Of course, straight-line performance isn’t exactly the name of Acura’s game, and it clearly showed with the TLX. However, the car is great in the corners. First of all, the TLX does come standard in front-drive form, but driving with all four wheels is a possibility. And if you do buy a front-drive TLX, then you’ll be happy to know that it also has Acura Precision All-Wheel Steering (P-AWS), which turns the rear wheels slightly when turning the front wheels for more precise cornering ability. Performance aspects aside, the TLX is also very comfortable.
The TLX might not be German, but it’s affordable and reliable
Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Audi A4. And while it admittedly doesn’t outperform any of them, it does provide an excellent overall value for anyone looking for a comfortable luxury sedan that’s a step above a Honda Accord. From 2018 and on, the Acura TLX was offered with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, as well as the Acura Watch suite of driver-assist features.
You can still find the current-generation Acura TLX from anywhere between $35,000 to $45,000 depending on which options you choose and Acura currently has a national lease deal for $289/month with $2,999 down, although, the deal may vary depending on your location.
Is it worth it to buy one now?
While the new 2021 TLX should be out soon and it has more to offer – including a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and an even more-aggressive Type-S trim level – we would say that the 2020 model is still a good buy for anyone looking possibly strike a good deal on a reliable and luxurious mid-size sedan. Also, if you lease it now, then you can just trade it in for a new 2023 or 2024 TLX later on, which might be more worth the wait.
