Is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe a Good Daily Driver?
The Wrangler 4xe is a plug-in hybrid version of Jeep’s timeless SUV. It makes a great daily driver. In fact, this layout convinced a reviewer that a Wrangler could actually make a great daily driver.
How many miles does the 4xe get?
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is rated for a 22-mile electric range by the EPA. It is also rated for 68 kWh/100 miles or the electric equivalent of 49 mpg. While under gasoline power it gets 20 mpg combined city/highway.
Car reviewer Ben Hardy recently got his hands on the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and posted his full test drive to YouTube. Though he was once a Jeep salesperson, Hardy has said in the past that this SUV does not make a good daily driver. But it was his weeklong 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe review that actually changed Hardy’s mind and pushed him to shop for his own Jeep daily driver.
The first thing he noticed about the 4xe plug-in hybrid drivetrain is its efficiency. He said, “In the full electric mode it actually does a pretty good job and with the regen you actually get pretty good range. It’s rated for 22 miles of range…and depending on how you drive you can definitely get that.”
Is the Wrangler 4xe fast?
Jeep claims the Wrangler 4xe can reach 60 mph in just 6.0 seconds. Car and Driver found the SUV could actually reach 60 in just 5.5 seconds.
The 4xe is not the fastest Wrangler powertrain, in a straight line. Car and Driver tested the V8-powered Wrangler Rubicon 392‘s 0-60 time at just 4.0 seconds. But while the 392 is front-heavy, the 4xe’s powertrain weight is spread out along the weight of the vehicle. The result is surprisingly nimble.
Hardy said, “It’s zippy. It has that small, lightweight, zippy feel. And I really like it. I love how this just drives.”
What’s more, the 4xe can get a little sideways in RWD mode. Hardy agreed, “You can break traction with it.”
A 5.5 second 0-60 puts the Wrangler ahead of most SUVs and hardy was impressed: “It’s pretty crazy how quick this accelerates.”
Which Wrangler is the best for daily driving?
On paper, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid is a clear choice for those with commutes less than its 22-mile range: you can have a Jeep EV for your commutes and a gas-powered 4×4 on the weekends. But for the Wrangler 4xe’s $53,798 MSRP, you could buy an ultra-efficient commuter car and a traditional Wrangler as well.
In Hardy’s Wrangler 4xe review, he admits that if you can afford the SUV’s high price it would make an excellent daily driver. His only gripe was the wind noise on his soft-top model. He urged buyers to consider a hard top for this very reason. Here’s what he said:
“It’s very comfortable actually, even on the highway. Other than the noise. The suspension and the damping and everything is actually really good. And so as a daily driver it’s actually great. The infotainment’s easy to use. The seats are comfortable. The heated seat function is nice.”
