On top of the mixed reviews, the Crosstrek is often overshadowed by its larger siblings. The Forester and the Outback remain as Subaru’s most popular models. Furthermore, the addition of Subaru’s Ascent makes it seem like the Crosstrek got further lost in the shuffle. But even so, Subaru isn’t killing off its Crosstrek; the SUV is still very much alive. In fact, Subaru has introduced significant updates to the model to make it more memorable.

The new Crosstrek will likely earn more fans

There have been a few drawbacks of the Crosstrek that are hard to ignore. Most of the complaints have to do with the vehicle’s standard powertrain. As with the outgoing 2020 model, the 2021 version comes with a 152-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

Consumer Reports said in its 2020 road test that the Crosstrek’s base engine lacks power at times and also said that it gets too loud. Reviewers at U.S. News also critiqued the Crosstrek for its underpowered engine. While these criticisms have merit, the good news is that this Subie now offers more power for those who want it.

The 2021 Crosstrek has a 182-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder that comes on the Sport and Limited trims. The added power makes the Crosstrek noticeably quicker and fun. It also makes it more competitive rivals like the Mazda CX-30 and the Hyundai Kona. We are still waiting to hear more about when the hybridized version of the Crosstrek will return for 2021. Subaru has been pretty mum on this topic.

Is it a bad idea to go with the base model?

Even though it doesn’t have the best reviews, it’s not a bad idea to go with the base model. The base model is smooth overall and easy to handle. Plus, the Crosstrek has standard all-wheel-drive, which makes it a worthy choice for light off-roading.

“When it comes to rugged car-based crossovers, few brands do it quite like Subaru. The 2021 Crosstrek subcompact SUV epitomizes the Japanese automaker’s personality in a neatly sized and thoughtful package. Based on the Impreza hatchback, the Crosstrek inherits a decidedly carlike driving experience but offers more ground clearance and truckier styling—and it can be had as a plug-in hybrid. “

The Crosstrek’s interior makes it a good choice too. Its standard cloth upholstery is basic but attractive enough. The Crosstreek comes with desirable tech also, including a 6.5-inch touchscreen display. All models have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity; optional gadgets include a wifi hotspot and navigation. The Crosstrek also impresses with its available safety equipment, like lane-keep assist and forward automatic emergency braking
