There aren’t a lot of sedans in this year’s lineup that has a V8 under the hood, but the BMW M5 makes the list, and it has more to offer than just a large displacement engine. It’s as practical as an SUV, as fun to drive as a sports car, and it might even be faster than the Audi R8.

Here’s what we get with the M5’s V8 engine

The BMW M5 might look like an unsuspectingly slow sedan but pop the hood and your opinion might change. This car is set up with a 4.4L V8 that offers drivers as much as 617hp.

Horsepower is one thing, but how does the car actually perform? From a complete stop, the M5 can get up to 60mph in an impressive 2.8 seconds. The powerful V8 paired with a twin turbocharger boost gives this car a quarter-mile time of 10.9 seconds, passing the finishing line at 129mph. It has an electronically governed top speed of 163mph but track versions of the car can be tuned to hit much higher speeds.

What makes this speed-demon even better? It retains all of the practicality of driving a sedan. The front seats are spacious, and the back seats offer enough legroom and height to accommodate taller passengers or large car seats.

The M5 has more to offer than just power, too

The BMW M5 is a great performance car, but as a sedan, there are also a lot of added benefits. You get the power of a sports car, with the addition of back seats that are easy to get in and out of. Some coupes this year do have V8 engines but they have back seats that have to be accessed with the driver or passenger out of the car, and they are often more cramped.

It isn’t all too uncommon to find V8 engines in trucks or SUVs, and while those are as practical as sedans, they do have their downfalls. The M5 is a full-sized sedan, but it is much easier to navigate around traffic in. You can also park the M5 without needing as much space as you would a larger vehicle, which is beneficial for anyone with small garages or having in small parking spots.

Another benefit to having a sedan over a truck or SUV is gas mileage, and while the V8 in the M5 doesn’t have great gas mileage, it’s still better than heavier vehicles with the same engine. In the city, you can expect to get an average of about 15mpg, and on the highway, you can get as much as 21mpg.

The 2020 BMW M5 might set you back around $100,000 off the lot, but with everything it has to offer, it might just be worth it. This is the sedan that has it all, and if you’re looking for something practical but don’t want to sacrifice a great driving experience, you don’t have to.
