In an age where SUVs and trucks rule the automotive market, new sedans are quietly fading away from dealership lots. A handful keeps rolling off the production line in hopes they’ll soon get adopted. Performance sedans, like the Genesis G70, are on top of their game, despite the sales turning to the SUV market. But other luxury sedans are vying to come out on top as well, like the Kia Stinger. MotorTrend looked at the two to see just how well they compare to each other. 

How are the Genesis G70 and the Kia Stinger GT similar?

To begin with, both cars come from the Hyundai family and have the same chassis platform that they’re built off of. Under the hood, each car has a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 motor matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. 

You’ll even find that both have the same gear and final drive ratios, but they don’t perform the same as they’re each tweaked a little bit differently. Another interesting piece of information is that they both have the same size wheels and tires even though their suspensions react differently on roads with various amounts of imperfections. 

The infotainment system on the Kia Stinger and the Genesis G70 are exactly the same, including the encasement for the display screen. Even the interface on both cars offers the same user-friendliness when accessing various features. The G70 may have a more refined interior styling, but the Stinger matches it with simplicity for those looking for something that isn’t complicated to use. 

Overview of the Kia Stinger GT

The Kia Stinger weighs about 310 pounds more than the G70 when you have the AWD version. Without the all-wheel-drive powertrain, the Kia Stinger is still about 170 pounds heavier than the G70.

You can attribute some of that weight difference to the heavier hatchback area, whereas the G70 sports regular trunk space. The extra added weight, however, is barely noticeable in the acceleration tests and doesn’t affect its ability to brake at long distances. 

The Kia Stinger runs a bit slower than the Genesis, which is surprising since both have the same engines and transmissions. To increase sportier handling in the Kia, the Stinger sports stiffer dampers, but the cost of having them is that ride quality ends up suffering. 

Wind noise is a problem, however, for the Stinger, since it can be heard inside the cabin easily. The Kia test vehicle MotorTrend used had a lot of squeaks and rattles in the interior as well, which could be very distracting to the driver. Also, cabin materials are of high quality, but they’re rather plain when compared to the G70.

Overview of the Genesis G70

As stated earlier, the Kia Stinger and the Genesis G70 have the same chassis, but the G70 weighs moderately less after production than the Stinger. Because of this, the G70 feels light and ready to tackle turns and corners at the drop of the hat which earned it the 2019 Car of the Year award from MotorTrend.

The suspension in the G70 differs vastly from the Stinger, allowing it to handle bumps and road imperfections with ease. Those riding in the cabin area will rarely feel any jostling that comes from driving on damaged road surfaces. 

The engine in the G70, although similar to the Stinger, runs a bit quicker and has about a half-second faster acceleration time than the Kia. Cabin space offers a relatively quiet ride with the dampened wind and tire noise seeping in. 

Overall, the Genesis G70 comes out on top, but that doesn’t mean that the Stinger can’t compete. There’s more than enough strength to the Kia to make it a decent alternative for a sporty luxury sedan.
