Is the 2021 Dodge Charger Hellcat SRT Redeye the Most Powerful Family Sedan?
Dodge is at it again when it comes to its pursuit of horsepower and the ability to melt the rear tires off of any Charger or Challenger that it builds going forward. To that end, it was no surprise when Dodge unveiled the Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye alongside its other fire-breathing power monsters: the Durango SRT Hellcat and the Challenger SRT Super Stock. And while the Durango was big news, what’s more, interesting is that they built a family sedan that can run a mid-10-second quarter-mile and then take the kids to school on Monday. Is this new Charger the most powerful sedan ever built?
The Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye has almost four times the power of a Honda Accord
Ever since Dodge has been stuffing Hellcat engines into almost any model that it can fit the supercharged engine into, making power north of 700 has been the norm. It’s no secret that making the most horsepower on paper has been the unofficial challenge among the three American automakers for the past five years and it looks like Dodge is doing what it can to stay ahead of the pack.
The 2021 Dodge Charger Hellcat SRT Redeye will produce an Earth-shattering 797 horsepower and 707 lb-ft of torque and will be able to run the quarter-mile in about 10.6 seconds. Keep in mind that this car can seat five comfortably, just like a Honda Accord, but with about four times the horsepower. Back in the day, it took a massive amount of effort, safety equipment, and a degree in physics to figure how to make a car run in the 10-second range. But now all you need is good credit and a hefty down payment and you’ll be pushing heads back into the seats on the way to Dairy Queen faster than you can say, “I live my life a quarter-mile at a time.”
The Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye must be for the “extreme” family
We know what you might be thinking, “Who, in their right mind, would buy this for their family?” Truth be told, the Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye is not for the average “white-picket-fence” family with 2.5 kids. If anything, we think it’s better catered to the “extreme” family that drinks protein shakes for breakfast and does CrossFit for the casual family get-together. The point is, it’s a niche car for a niche group of buyers that wants to the most out of life when it comes to keeping up with the Joneses. Because with this car, you can do more than just keep up with them. In fact, you can probably blow the doors off any other car in the neighborhood. But we digress.
In order to put down the nearly 800 horsepower to the ground, the Charger Hellcat Redeye uses massive 20×11-inch wheels wrapped in sticky Pirelli tires in addition to an adaptive damping suspension fitted with Bilstein dampers and three different drive modes. The typical electronic traction aids are present, including a line lock, launch control, and Dodge’s Launch Assist, which helps in controlling wheel hop. Basically, almost everything on this car is meant for it to go really fast in a straight line. But when it needs to come to a stop, a two-piece Brembo brake system with 15.7-inch front rotors and six-piston calipers are up to the task.
The demon is in the details
Aside from all the performance enhancements, the Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye is outfitted with a newly designed hood with a functional hood scoop for better cooling and a more “menacing” look. The front fascia was also given the wide-body treatment, which includes a more aggressive “mail-slot” grille and 3.5-inch wider fenders. According to Dodge, these cooling modifications, along with the airbox mounted in the fender liner, give the engine compartment an 18-percent increase in airflow to keep temperatures down. And it sure needs it, especially if anyone plans to take the car up to its top speed of 203 mph.
But in case you’re planning to just use the car to take the kids to school, you’ll be delighted that this Charger has a relatively comfortable interior that features Alcantara and leather seats to keep the family happy as you terrorize the streets. And when it’s all said and done, the Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye will likely be the fastest and most powerful family sedan you can buy and probably ever own.
