The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers plenty of engine options

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2021 Toyota 4Runner come standard with a V6 engine under the hood. But when it comes to additional engine options, it’s the Jeep Grand Cherokee that has the edge. Unlike this year’s 4Runner, the Grand Cherokee offers three additional engine options, including a 5.7-liter V8, a 6.4-liter V8, or a 707-hp 6.2-liter engine.

For added towing power, stick with the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee has the edge when it comes to towing too. Boasting a best-in-class available towing capacity of 7,200-pounds, this year’s new Grand Cherokee offers up more than enough brawn to pull anything from a small trailer to an RV. As for the Toyota 4Runner? This year’s model is only able to tow 5,000-pounds. While that’s not terrible, it’s definitely a lot less than what the Grand Cherokee can manage.

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is more reliable than its Jeep competition

But when it comes to overall reliability? Well, the Toyota 4Runner is the better option. According to Consumer Reports, this year’s model earned a five out of five predicted reliability rating. But that shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. The 4Runner has always been a reliable SUV. The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee? Well, this year’s model earned a paltry three out of five predicted reliability rating from Consumer Reports.

It also holds its value better than the Jeep Grand Cherokee

When it comes to depreciation, the 2021 Toyota 4Runner is the better pick. CarEdge reports that a new Toyota 4Runner will depreciate 33% after five years. That means that after five years of ownership, it will have a resale value of $29,911. Unfortunately for the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, CarEdge reports that it will depreciate 56% after five years and have a five-year resale value of $20,914. That’s a pretty big difference.

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is slightly more expensive

Odds are, you’re not looking to break the bank with your next car purchase. If that’s the case, then it’s important to understand how much each vehicle costs. The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee boasts a base price of $34,220 and will have you spending $87,915 on its most expensive model. As for the 4Runner? It boasts a slightly higher base price of $36,590, but a fully-loaded model will only cost you $50,570.

Which SUV is better, the Toyota 4Runner or the Jeep Grand Cherokee?

This one really comes down to what you’re looking for in your next SUV. If you’re after a vehicle that holds its value and is known for being reliable, then the 2021 Toyota 4Runner is your pick. But if you need an SUV that’s capable of towing more than 5,000-pounds and offers a lower base price? Then the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee might be the right fit for you.
