Is the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer a Good SUV for Towing?
Stellantis’ new SUV, the Grand Wagoneer from Jeep, is excellent at towing. The 2022 Grand Wagoneer leads its class with a tow rating of nearly 10,000 pounds. When compared to trucks with an even higher tow rating, this SUV proves to be more nimble and efficient while pulling a heavy trailer.
The Grand Wagoneer Jeep SUV’s tow rating is 9,850 pounds
One of the secrets of the 2022 Grand Wagoneer’s high tow rating is that its built on a truck chassis. This full-size SUV shares the Ram truck’s “DT” platform. This includes a fully-boxed ladder frame and V8 engine. Jeep builds every Grand Wagoneer with the 6.4-liter HEMI V8. In addition the Grand Wagoneer gets the eTorque mild-hybrid system.
Another secret to the Grand Wagoneer’s success is that Jeep improved on the existing Ram technology. While the current-generation of the Ram 1500 rides on a solid rear axle, every Grand Wagoneer benefits from independent rear suspension. And while Ram offers 2WD and part time 4WD drivetrains, the Grand Wagoneer shares full time 4WD with the top-trim Ram 1500 TRX.
The 2022 Grand Wagoneer equals or surpasses the Ram 1500 while towing 8,000+ pounds

Fuel use while towing | 9.7 mpg | 9.8 mpg |
The reviews at TFL Truck were curious how the 2022 Grand Wagoneer would fare against a heavy-duty truck with a heavy-duty towing capacity. They took a Ram 1500 with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 and an 11,000+ pound towing capacity and pitted it against the 2022 Grand Wagoneer. The team was surprised by the results.
With its independent rear suspension and full time 4WD, the Grand Wagoneer performed better than the Ram 1500 while both towed 8,000 pound trailers. The Grand Wagoneer proved to be faster while pulling the trailer, and was just as fuel efficient as the Ram’s smaller engine. Without the trailer, the Grand Wagoneer proved much faster, and much more fuel efficient. You can see the test in the video below.

For years, only General Motors and Ford competed in the full-size American luxury SUV market segment. Their offerings were the F150-based Lincoln Navigator and Silverado-based Cadillac Escalade. Both of these SUVs offer decent 2WD tow ratings, and lower ratings for their 4WD models.
For the 2022 model year, Stellantis joined the fray with its Grand Wagoneer. The mighty Grand Wagoneer boasts a tow rating higher than its Detroit competitors’ 2WD models. Better yet, the Grand Wagoneer achieved this feat with a full time 4WD SUV.
If you need a third row of seating, 4WD, and ample towing power, the Grand Wagoneer is worth considering.
